In this brief post, I will share different types of leaders we experience in the daily life. A lot has been written about different leadership styles which when you read make you wonder where I find this type of leaders. This an attempt to address the confusion and trust would help to clear the confusion to some degree.
I believe there are three types of leaders you experience in real life
- Accidental Leader
- Installed Leader
- True Leader
Accidental Leader
These are the people who have done well in the previous role and were at the right place at the right time to get into the leadership role. They start in the role with confusion simply because they have no idea of leading. Generally, this type of leader like to keep the “status quo” and rarely try new way of doing things. They try to “please all” with their actions. They do not believe in people development and if you happen to work with this kind of leader, just keep doing your job and do not expect any career growth. Self-motivation is the best way to survive in this situation.
Installed Leader
These are the people who have been promoted because they have excellent relationship with the powers to be and have excellent skills to manage up. The Inherited leader falls into this category. This type of leader always has an attitude that “I am the smartest person in the room” and rarely possess good listening skills. They are always focused on impressing the powers to be and have less appetite for team building and plan for career opportunities for the team. If you happen work for this type of a leader, try to stay calm and hope it’s only a temporary. Stay positive is the best way survive in this situation.
True Leader
These are the people who have the Leadership skills that we often read in the books. They have a vision, an execution strategy and rarely try to “please all” with their decisions. This type of Leaders understands the impact of their actions and never misses an opportunity to invest in people. If you happen to work for this type of leader, consider your-self a lottery winner. If you happen to identify this type of leader, try to follow them and learn from their actions. Positive attitude and be able to continuously learn is the best way to get maximum benefit from this lucky situation.
