Practical Advice on Where to Start Learning About AI

In our previous discussions (1 - From marketing to app development with AI and 2 - Is AI Coming for our Job?), we explored how I relearned programming using AI and the importance of staying ahead in your career by understanding AI's capabilities. Now, let's dive into practical steps on how you can start learning about AI.

First, whatever you think you can do that is special, just assume AI can do it. This mindset will help you identify opportunities where AI can assist you, and it’s a great way to start exploring its potential.

Next, pick an AI tool you like—whether it's ChatGPT, Gemini, or another. Start using it by asking the AI how to learn about the specific skill you want to automate. The AI will guide you with articles, tutorials, and resources. For example, you might find introductory articles or Coursera courses suggested by the AI.

Then, focus on a use case and implement it as soon as possible. Don’t just read about AI—apply it as early as possible. If you’re a developer, think about either a tough algorithm that you are having a hard time solving, or a repetitive task across your code base that you want to automate and start from there. If you're in marketing, try using AI for something you'll need to do in your job. Make sure to check your company's AI policy to avoid any issues.

Be lazy. By being lazy, you’ll naturally find ways to use AI to do tasks you don't like doing, and even some you enjoy. This approach will force you to discover more use cases, enhancing your proficiency with AI.

Start small and iterate quickly. Assume that tasks that used to take a day will now take fifteen minutes. Your first prototype will be fast to build, so you can quickly iterate and improve.

Continue implementing new use cases. As you repeatedly find and implement new AI applications, you’ll become proficient. This proficiency will help you connect the dots to a future where you’re significantly more productive in your job.

By following these steps, you'll not only learn about AI but also become adept at using it to enhance your productivity and capabilities. Happy learning!
