the PR roundup: July

the PR roundup: July

Hellooooo. Well have I got a juicy PR roundup for you today!

And if you're like me and now in the school summer holidays, enjoy. (She says while pulling a 5-7am work shift before mini wakes up.)

So here's what we've got in store this edition;

  • Why I shouldn't be allowed drinks in the studio
  • Barbie's PR shakeup
  • PR tip when emailing journalists
  • An airline PR fail
  • And, of course, some more goodies!

Let's just dive right in...

First up, content I think you'll like...

Drinks and podcast equipment really don't mix

The Big Biz Show is well in to its first season now and my goodness we’ve learned a lot so far.

?? Tech will go out of it’s way to p*** you off

?? A lil prep goes a long way

?? I pull really funny faces when the camera is on me

?? And, most importantly, that drinks should not be left next to the equipment

Yup, that last one was me.

Oops.

PR tip: from what journalists actually want

As a PR person, I love getting links when myself or a client are featured. As a journalist, I totally appreciate this isn't always possible.

If you've spoken with a journalist and know that something featuring your name is imminent, here's what you can do so you don't hound the poor person...

  • Set up Google Alerts for your name and your company so when you're published online you get an email (this is free!)

That's it. Set up some free Google Alerts and follow the journalist online so you can see yourself when you're piece goes live.

PR - who's killing it

There is only one name that take the PR trophy this month. And that's Barbie.

Everyone’s talking about it because it is EVERYWHERE. Even my son wants to go see it (but mainly because he found out it’s just been rated 12A and thinks it’ll be naughty).

They’ve turned London Underground Barbican station into "Barbiecan", built a Barbie dream house, got actress Margot herself on the PR train, made a sublime Airbnb house, even put out plain pink billboard with only the date in Barbie font.

They may have MILLIONS spare for this campaign - but by god they have absolutely smashed their movie launch campaign.

Man I wish I was in that PR and marketing team right now. Mattel - call me ??

PR tip

When emailing journalists do not put "RE:" in your email as a tactic to make them think they've already started a conversation with you.

People do this to me and it's icky. It's not a reply, it's just plain sneaky.

Make your email pop with a standout subject line that gets them to open it in a much nicer way. Like the topic or title of your story!

PR fail

Airline Lufthansa had an advert banned after claiming it's 'green' initiatives were proven to be misleading customers on the environmental impact of flying.

The lesson here: Even with good intentions, be REAL careful what you're promising and putting in print!

The Barbie film has made going to the cinema an EVENT again after years of the streaming services taking over. I saw so many people on Saturday getting together with their friends, wearing pink, going for dinner before (and drinks after ??). It was amazing to see! We need more things to get dressed up for and celebrate with our friends. We may have been sucked in by all the marketing but we’ve had a lot of fun because of it ??????
