PPT Tips: 4 Ways to Improve a Data Visualisation Slide

Data visualization doesn't have to be a headache. Check out these simple tips for creating visually appealing slides that make even the heaviest numbers easy to digest.

By the way, any Excel specialists here? I just posted a question on LinkedIn - seeking advice for advanced Excel visualization. Have a look at that LinkedIn post on my profile there.

4 Ways to Improve a Data Viz Slide

Let us share four simple design ways to make your data chart more visually attractive.

  • Highlight one piece of information - the most important trend, outlier, gap comparison. Use a contrasting color to focus on that value. Or marker-like shapes to highlight that key data.
  • Use icons and distinctive colors to illustrate various data categories. Think of visual associations that will work best for your audience.

  • Extract the essence. Maybe not all data are needed to be presented. Show only key data. You can use simple infographic shapes to show those key numbers.
  • If you can select only key values, show those numbers creatively - put them inside a diagram, and add a representative icon next to the number.

Get Inspired: Slide Makeover

In the image below you can see how we facelifted the look of the default old-looking table to make it easier to read.

The goal of a such slide redesign is to make your data comparison resonate and be attractive to look at.

We assigned various colors to two periods that slide compares. The new cell background color underlines the most important data - the total row here. We also added a place for a description of what those data mean.
