We’re inviting everyone to our free program Building a Black Ecosystem on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at the Rondo Community Library from 1-2 p.m. The event will feature the first-ever presentation of the documentary “The Ghana Year of Return Trip” that I led in 2019. It’s a tribute to the enslaved Ghanian people from which many African Americans are descended.
The event is part of our Akwaaba Community Teach-In Series conducted by PPGJLI. I led a pilgrimage to Ghana during “The Year of the Return,” marking the 400th anniversary of when the first ships arrived in North America in 1619. It was a truly Sankofa experience for many people as they returned to the land of their ancestors.
The screening documents many points of interest, such as Makola Market. However, for those that were unable to make the pilgrimage to the land of their heritage, the documentary provides stark information and visuals about the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, the pain and indignity of the Last Bath, the Cape Coast slave castle, and the Door of No Return.
Building a Black Ecosystem is one of our ongoing programs to foster leadership development through cultural learning experiences. PPGJLI plans to hold more Akwaaba Community Teach-Ins and Community Art Exhibitions.

The Teach-Ins are community education and learning experiences that focus on the history and culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora, along with a community healing circle to uplift the community.
We’ll be hosting traveling art exhibitions, of which “The Ghana Year of Return Trip” will be featured. The events will focus on how community members have organized change based on shared goals of equity, community building, and economic development.
As part of our community training efforts, we’ll be launching another series of The Beyond Return community pilgrimages to Ghana. Individuals will learn grassroots organizing strategies and a deeper understanding of the principles of arts-based community development.
Please join us for Building a Black Ecosystem to learn more about the history of slavery and what you can do in the present to help build a better future.
