PPAs must have Technology !
There seems to be a growing number of PPA type agreements circulating at the moment, this in my humble opinion is a great way of offering PV and /or Battery storage coupled with Energy saving Technologies to the masses.
There is an idiosyncrasy that I would like to address with these schemes.
These agreements largely work by a Business/factory householder having Technologies installed for free and buy back Electricity from the Funder at a cheaper rate than what they are currently paying, great news for the Business/homeowner and funder alike, so so far so good.
Now as usual for those that know me, let’s turn it on its head a little.
As an example we will use a domestic customer but the same stands true for business users.
Mrs Jones has just entered into one of these arrangements and loves the idea of paying a cheaper rate for her Electricity, Mrs Jones is very careful on what power she uses and when, she has a lovely PV system that is generating 3kw, as she is so careful she decides to have a cuppa with her 3KW Kettle as she thinks it’s now going to be costing her less! Her display says she is generating 3kw and so she switches on the kettle, ‘EEK!’ Her Voltage is 250v so the kettle is boiling at 3543 watts!! She’s just had to pay for an extra 543 watts from her Electricity supplier at the higher rate!
Now not only is this bad news for Mrs Jones it is also bad news for the funder as he has just lost 543watts towards his xx year’s payback forever.
If the funder had installed one of our clever little Voltage Management products then the kettle would boil slightly slower but he would get all of the 3543 watts towards his payback and Mrs Jones would be paying all of the kettles power at the lower rate, the only winner in this scenario is the fat cat Electricity supplier.
Also if there is Battery Storage coupled with an inverter ask yourself this simple question, would you prefer your batteries to discharge at a lower rate or a higher rate? Trust me if the commercial unit or household Voltage were lower, the battery will last longer due to fewer discharge cycles
