Tracking The Untracked With Fibre Channel VM-ID

Although virtualization has existed since the 1960s (thank you, IBM), virtual machines (VMs) became mainstream in the early 2000s. The idea was to enable better utilization of the available hardware resources by running multiple VMs on a single physical hardware platform. But how do you manage those VMs?

Read how?Fibre Channel VM-ID helps to manage VMs.

KIOXIA E1.S SSDs Make AI Workflows More Efficient

While there’s a significant amount of hype around dense GPU servers for AI, and rightfully so, the reality is that most AI training projects start on workstations. Although we can now jam up to four NVIDIA A6000 Ada GPUs into a single workstation, what’s more challenging is getting robust storage in these AI boxes. We thought about this issue and came up with a plan. Read Jordan's AI plan using?KIOXIA E1.S SSDs.

Micron 7500 Pro, 7500 Max SSD Review

The Micron 7500 Pro and Max enterprise SSD series extend on the success of the 7400 and 7450 SSD families. Still a Gen4 SSD, the Micron 7500 family takes the 7450 platform and equips it with new 232-layer NAND. With the 7500 drives, Micron is trying to address the needs of mainstream enterprise deployments that are largely still on Gen4.

Podcast #123: Cloud-Based GPUs For AI

This podcast features a conversation between Brian and Jeffrey Gregor (he prefers Gregor). ?Gregor is the General Manager for OVHcloud? US, a leading cloud provider with a global presence. Prior to joining OVHcloud, Gregor was a Navy Officer, ?a highly decorated Navy Officer, with over 15 years serving the US.

OVHcloud was established in 1999, with some borrowed funds and hardware, ?as a web-hosting startup in northern France and has grown steadily, expanding across Europe. Following the expansion into Canada in 2015, ?OVHcloud opened offices in the US. Gregor joined OVHcloud when the company opened offices in northern Virginia. And the expansion continues.

We recently posted a deep-dive review for OVHcloud US, focusing on GPUs in the cloud and how to approach?cloud training for AI.? The review is worth the time as it provides background on OVH, how we performed our tests, and the results.

Our lab upgrades aren’t exactly well planned and thought out all the way. Normally it’s Kevin making Brian drag equipment around as he remembers halfway through “Oh yeah, hold that a second while I get the other parts.”

A brand new QNAP TS-h1290FX just rolled into the lab. AMD CPU with 8 DIMM slots, 4 PCIe slots, and of course, 12x NVMe SSD support. 2x 25GbE on board with a few 2.5GbE ports as well. Starts at $4900, our review is in the works .

We posted a review tonight of an amazing AMD EPYC Genoa-X 96 core “workstation.” Essentially an upright server, we put together about $33K in components to make perhaps the most powerful workstation to date with an A6000, DDR5 from Kingston, and a ton of storage - both HDD and flash. The review is up on the website.

We just got this brand new Supermicro GPU A+ Server AS -4125GS-TNRT in the lab. It’s a 4U air-cooled GPU server with support for twin AMD EPYC CPUs, including the 128-core Bergamo monsters. We’re just getting started but look forward to all that this can enable for our reviews and AI training.
