? Powering Up The H1
Greetings Doroni family,
Today we’re shining a light on one of the most critical elements of the H1—its battery management and electrical systems.
Derek Barger, Doroni’s Chief Electrical and Electronics Engineer—has been absolutely essential to giving life to the H1 and has been pivotal to the company’s success since day one.
As we noted in Monday’s update, Derek recently moved operations cross-country from Boulder, CO to join the team here in Miami—and along with him came the latest test batteries he’s been developing for the H1.
The test batteries are 100 lbs. each in 4 modules, and will be distributed on the H1 airframe in a 2 in front, 2 in back configuration. Each battery will have a voltage of 200Vdc and are designed to power test the new motor designs and short test flights. In total, this test iteration of the H1 eVTOL will have a 400Vdc system with 4000 Amps of total power of 1.6 MW.
The H1 P1 frame itself is really starting to take shape, and you can begin to picture what the final build will ultimately look like.
Above you can see Derek and Bob working together to finalize the positioning of these test batteries on the H1’s airframe.
A little background on Derek:
Over the past 5 years, Doroni and Derek have built battery and electrical systems for both the Y6 and X8 prototypes, the latter being the 643 lb. vehicle that achieved liftoff.
Derek has built hundreds of batteries during his career, and since 2003 has prided himself on creating some of the best custom lithium battery packs and battery management systems for racing applications in the world. Along the way, he’s accumulated multiple records globally and was a pioneering force in achieving speeds above 200 MPH with electric vehicles.
On May 4, 2012 Derek helped set a world record with the Rocket Bike, built in partnership with Orange County Choppers, which recorded 201.37 MPH in a quarter mile in an astonishing 6.94 seconds! This feat accomplished two firsts in electric vehicle history—first to break the 7 second barrier and the first to go over 200 MPH in a quarter mile!

In addition to Orange County Choppers, over his career Derek has worked with A123, Mythbusters and the Discovery Channel, and Steve Huff Motorsports among others.
He was also instrumental in developing the 850 HP electric racing car, the Drayson B12/69 EV, which was the electric evolution of the race car that placed third at Le Mans in 2010.
What is he most excited about in developing the H1 with Doroni? “The challenges—I’ve always liked the challenges. The problem-solving, I’ve always been able to do that very well.”
Batteries and battery management systems will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in bringing the eVTOL market online within the next 2-3 years. With the promise of technology and efficiency improving while costs drop, we’re thrilled to be pushing our talents and technical prowess to the fullest to make our vision of H1 eVTOL a reality.
