Powering Through the Eclipse with Innowatts

Powering Through the Eclipse with Innowatts

The countdown is on and we’re eagerly anticipating Monday's Great North American Solar Eclipse which will sweep across Mexico, the United States, and Canada!

Innowatts is at the forefront in ensuring energy stability. Our enhanced AI-powered Load Forecasts provide precise insights, enabling retail energy providers, utilities & grid operators, as well as large industrial, and commercial?users to seamlessly navigate the brief solar interruption.

To illustrate the impact of the eclipse on solar generation output, our Innowatts Forecasting team has analyzed data for 20,000 residential customers with?rooftop solar installations located in the Houston and North zones of the Texas ERCOT electricity market.

Based on the current weather forecast, which?are predicting 80% cloud cover?on Monday, a 10,000-customer rooftop solar portfolio in #Houston?is predicted to experience an approximate?22?MWh shortfall in generation.

At the same time a similar portfolio in the North zone, which is closer to the path of totality, the shortfall in generation rises to about?28?MWh. Due to the increased cloud cover however, the overall impact of the solar eclipse will be slightly lower than previous expectations.

Shaded area indicates forecasted loss of solar generation output during the solar eclipse across a 10,000 meter rooftop solar portfolio in the Houston and North ERCOT market zones. The orange line indicated the forecasted solar generation from 00:01 Sunday April 7 through 23:59 Tuesday April 9.

As of March 28th, solar farms in Texas have achieved a record output, supplying 18,877 megawatts of electricity to the grid. This impressive capacity is sufficient to power around 4 million homes in Texas.

During the eclipse,?this solar generation will be degraded to varying degrees which?obviously will have a significant impact on output from utility scale solar generation as well as on residential and industrial rooftop solar generation output as we have seen above.

The good news however, is that solar eclipses are entirely predictable, and therefore the energy sector is well prepared to manage the expected drop in solar energy production on Monday.

This was underscored by a recent New York Times article which noted that the October 2023 eclipse provided learnings and ‘prompted increased planning for the upcoming eclipse’ which should ensure that residential and business customers are unlikely to experience any disruption to electricity supply.

If you are on the path for Monday's eclipse hopefully the skies will be clear as the next total solar?eclipse that will be seen from the contiguous United States will be on August 23 2044!

Innowatts advanced insights and forecasts are ready to help keep the?lights on when the sun takes a brief pause - we hope you?enjoy the show!
