Powering Sustainable Growth: Rethinking Africa’s Business Agenda
Lagos Business School Sustainability Centre
Bringing together theory and practice on sustainability and business in Africa.
Welcome to the January edition of our newsletter!
As we step into 2025, we recognise the momentum needed to progress towards sustainable development outcomes, especially in the wake of some changing geopolitical priorities. Whatever the political leanings may be, the reality of the impact of issues like poverty and changing climate on societies and economies is apparent; therefore, business leaders should remain strategically focused on what 'sustainability' means for their companies now and in the future.?At the recent?World Economic Forum Annual Meetings in Davos, the discussions?reinforced the urgency of scaling sustainable solutions, particularly in developing and emerging markets where innovation and resilience are driving progress.
Africa, home to the world’s youngest population (median age: 19.7), is emerging as a key growth frontier that can become a game-changing advantage if the right steps are taken. At Davos, leaders prioritized strategies to harness Africa’s demographic dividend—bridging digital, energy, and financial divides while advancing a just transition. With 300 million people still lacking electricity, unlocking the continent’s renewable energy potential is not just an opportunity but an imperative. A fully powered Africa will drive economic expansion, create jobs, and catalyze entrepreneurship at an unprecedented scale.
These issues are important notes for macroeconomic analysis for businesses, and in the body of this newsletter, we highlight the latest sustainability breakthroughs shaping Africa’s future. Under this month’s theme, "Powering Sustainable Growth: Rethinking Africa’s Business Agenda," we spotlight transformative initiatives that can?deliver positive and transformative impacts. We invite you to engage, collaborate, and lead in shaping a more sustainable and prosperous future. Let’s make 2025 a year of bold action and business-driven progress.
