These phrases have served me well in the past, and they're as close to a magic wand as words can get. (And yes, they work beyond the boardroom too!)

? "What problem are we truly trying to solve here?"
? "If money and time weren’t an issue, what choices would we make?"
? "If this [Insert HR innovation] doesn’t work out as expected, we can always revert to the previous way. It's a risk-free pilot, right?"
? "What kind of workplace would you want for your children?"
? "It’s great that we’re aligned on this. What’s the first step we can take to move forward?"
? "This isn’t aligned with the kind of employer we aspire to be—or compliant with labor law. So, it's not up for discussion."
? "Thank you for sharing this past experience. In our new context, we can try it again, using these valuable lessons to increase the chances of success."
