Powerful Learning for ALL

When we launched Digital Promise in the fall of 2011, we didn’t have much, but we did have ideas, a network of leading thinkers, a bit of seed funding from the U.S. Department of Education and a Congressional statute calling on us to spur innovation to advance learning opportunity. Over the last six years, we have grown our capacity to more deeply support the vision behind the statute. Our supporters have made it possible to build out our networks, focus on a diverse portfolio of challenges, and conduct research.

As I look at the year ahead, one big challenge is how to scale Powerful Learning opportunities, especially to underserved students. Powerful Learning experiences engage learners with BIG ideas, provide the technology tools to support research, design and solution development, facilitate connections to support communication and collaboration and the develop skills for life. Students build agency, learn humility, get inspired, and gain the confidence to solve problems and take action. What are your examples of powerful learning? What were the circumstances? What did you need to be successful? Please share in the comments.

Educational Administrator Specializing in Professional Learning and Micro-Credentials

As a teacher in a small rural district, I suppose I can speak directly to the “trickle down effect” of statutes and research. I have been involved with Tennessee’s micro-credential pilot program. I'm now a virtual community facilitator, so I can vouch for the impact your vision has had on my practice. PD is such an important part of an educator’s journey. If micro-credentials are a spoke in the wheel of education improvement, I'm on board.

Powerful Learning. I like it.

Teachers in those settings need the support of leaders (both administrators and school board members) to truly grasp how the use of digital tools can empower their students. Too often, there is a lack of vision and understanding about the potential...accompanied by a lack of awareness about what it really takes to put all the pieces in place for success...the investments in PD and a robust and reliable infrastructure ; the realization it is about more than purchasing devices; and the creation of culture that supports risk-takers.
