I am from a 'No name' college in Tamilnadu. Though I did fairly well in my exams (definitely not any closer to the top honchos) I never did I hit an opportunity to write the national exams as there was hardly one to guide me to the right path. All forces behind me were my parents who consistently fought with my adolescent problems and guided me in their possible way.
I wrote the entrance exams of both Kerala and Tamilnadu. The opportunity I had to do well in the TNPCE was ruined by myself, with unforeseen availability of freedom and in the mean time, the one I thought I fared better was Kerala entrance exam. The result was withheld since I could not produce the proof of my statehood. Leaving with no other options, I went for the counselling of Tamilnadu Entrance Exam.
There was not so much googling flourished during 2000 and no reviews. All I had was some stats available through then dial-up internet services about the college and I took the college I picked it up without even knowing where it exist or how it is. As it is prevalent, these colleges are employed with people who had no other existence except teaching and really few who are motivated by the profession. I don't blame them as well since most of them were a year senior to me and passed out of engineering. Starting from the data-structure to software engineering, we learned all without knowing it's core. I appeared exams and got decent marks and here I am in the job market without knowing basics of anything. I do not blame the staff alone. There might be many in my class who knew better than me but at least the average engineering students during the period reflected my experience.
I realized that I am in deep trouble when I first attended the interview from @Microsoft. I realized how much I lacked the basics and then on there was no looking back. I learned as much as possible to understand the LinkedList, reverse Linkedlist and nuances of Datastructure . My first job in Seed as a trainer helped me set all my basics right and then on I never missed an opportunity to train new joiners the fundamentals in every organization I had worked for.
Now the subject. It was during Philips I realized that there were many colleagues of mine who passed out from IIT. I did not find any better decisions or implementation from them except their salaries were always guessed to be high. I had an opportunity to mentor a IIT pass out and that made me realize that the opportunities these institution offered were high so that anyone with average capability can achieve their goals faster than the one like us. This doesn't make us any little and the only positive I see in them is their dedication during the crucial moment of entrance exam and vast knowledge of the faculty there. They are dedicated and carry the passion of teaching as their career. This boosted my confidence immensely and then when I moved to Schneider, I had peers or subordinates passed out from IIT's.
Though it took a little melodrama of shoving the complex, it made me boost the confidence to rocket high. Today I am proud to say that I am not powered by IIT and neither my achievements, if any. They were groomed to achieve the goals which I am sure that I could achieved if I had the opportunity choose the path. When ever I see a startup which proudly announce that the founders are from IIT, it just brings a grin in my face. That of-course attracts big names to them, venture capitalists, investments and they might never struggle the bootstrap crisis, but I believe my capabilities I have attained are at-par if not above them in all means.
Every engineering student who flocks out of today's education system is going through this crisis. It is the fact that many are not employable. It is no longer a trend to say that I belong to engineering curriculum. I believe that it is our responsibility to groom them and guide them to the right path and accept the challenges unleashed by this world of opportunities. Put your head straight up and realize that only aspect that would help you to achieve your dreams is to attain what your colleges failed to provide. Everything is available at your fingertip and that my friend is immense to make you meet your goal.
