The Power of Your Why ??
Greetings YSCO community!
Starting something from scratch is no easy feat. There's no manual, no cheat codes. While you can follow in the footsteps of those who came before you, in the end, this is YOUR path. Each day, you must carve out your way forward.
Motivation is wonderful, but it fades. Goals are crucial, but life often gets in the way. What truly matters is your why. If your why is big enough, your how will take care of itself.
Think about it. Why did you start your journey? What drives you to keep pushing forward even when the going gets tough? Your why is your anchor, your source of strength and determination.
Spanx: A Real World Example
In 1998, Sara Blakely was a 27-year-old Florida State graduate selling fax machines door-to-door in Clearwater, Florida. Despite her success as a national sales trainer at Danka, Blakely wasn't passionate about selling office equipment. One day, she had an epiphany. “I woke up one day and thought, ‘I’m in the wrong movie, call the director! What happened? This is not my life,’” Blakely recalls.
Determined to find her true calling, she wrote down her strengths and dreams in a journal: “I want to invent a product that I can sell to millions of people that will make them feel good.” The inspiration struck when she wanted to wear cream slacks but didn't have suitable underwear that wouldn't show through. She improvised by cutting the feet off her control-top pantyhose. Despite some initial discomfort, she realized she had created something other women would love.
With this idea, Spanx was born. Blakely faced numerous rejections and obstacles, taking two years to get anyone to see the value of her idea. “I didn’t realize that selling fax machines door-to-door was really laying the groundwork for me to be able to be an inventor and create a product that had never been done before,” Blakely says. “The cold-calling to sell fax machines was an amazing training ground for hearing ‘no.’ I just learned that there’s a formula, you have to go through a certain number of ‘no’s to get to a ‘yes,’ so don’t let it discourage you.”

Today, Spanx offers over 200 products, with estimated annual sales of $400 million. Blakely’s perseverance and unwavering belief in her why turned her into the youngest self-made female billionaire in the United States. Her journey is a powerful testament to the idea that if your why is big enough, your how will take care of itself.
