The Power Of Your Personal Mission

I'm sure you know individuals who are highly motivated and driven. I've met them throughout my career and, for most of the time, "motivated" and "driven" were some of my personal descriptors. It appears that no matter what they deal with, whether it is a task, in their job/business, or doing something around the house, there is a sense of purpose and "mission" to what they do.
They desire to do their absolute best and achieve something. They have purpose and deliberateness behind their actions. They radiate an appealing sort of confidence that draws you in.
On the other hand, you also know individuals who appear to be going through the motions. In recruiting and HR this is sometimes called a "warm chair". The body is at the desk, but the mind is far from work!
It usually spreads to all areas of their life. They do the bare minimum at work and when they get home, they do just enough to make it to the sofa so they can invest the remainder of the night with TELEVISION.
A conversation with this person typically leads to spending a great deal of energy and time concentrating on what's incorrect with life, a search for things to complain about.
“Outstanding people have one thing in common: an absolute sense of mission.” Zig Ziglar
The bad news is that this second type of character is easy for any one of us to fall into. You can end up being passive and unenthusiastic in life and within a couple of days of practicing this type of behavior, it can quickly end up being a lifelong habit.
Fortunately the FIRST kind of personality is just as simple to "fall" into. The only distinction is that you have to raise yourself to that level. It doesn't just "occur" by default.
Every day you have the opportunity to select which direction you want to take. You get to make the choice to be an individual who brings him/herself into the day with purpose or mission. Frankly, this is just as easy as choosing the opposite direction.
The Secret To Leveraging Your Personal Mission
The secret is to discover things to get charged up about!
It doesn't need to be all that complex. Often you can begin with simple and small things. If you discover yourself slouching on the couch with a remote, when you know you ought to be doing something productive, all you have to do is FORCE yourself to stand up and select a job to start. It is just a choice you willfully make.
Sit there and accomplish nothing or get up and get something done.
One exercise that works well for me, and that you may want to try yourself, is the smartphone motivator idea.
Here's how this works.... Set a 15 minute timer on your smartphone. Focus on absolutely nothing else and permit ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to distract you from the job until you hear the buzzer at the end of 15 minutes. (I actually use a 25 minute timer, but let's just try this to get you started.)
What you will likely discover is a sensation of momentum. It is a feeling that makes you want to continue with the task until it is done.
Then you select something else to do and the next job appears far simpler and more exciting to take on.
Before you know it, you can invest a whole day operating with this sort of "mission" mentality. In a short time you'll find this actually carries over for weeks at a time. In truth, if you practice this enough, it simply becomes part of who you are and it can have a life altering effect.
Give it a try now. Put down the remote, set your timer, and get to work.
Your personal belief about how YOU can establish a sense of mission in your life. A sense of mission that moves you forward and prevents you from dipping into a rut that will only wind up discouraging you in the long run.
