The Power of YOU!

I had a coworker contact me and share with me that they were disappointed about someone else getting a promotion over them. I listened. I then asked questions. I asked if they were meeting with their manager every week to discuss job responsibilities and professional development topics. They told me that meeting with their manager was not weekly, but intermittently. They explained that their manager was extremely busy. I know their manager and agree that they are extremely busy.

This person had no idea how much power they had. I told them to stand up and take their power back. I told them that it is okay to be disappointed, but to use this as a launching pad for taking back control. I asked them to put a weekly meeting with their manager on the calendar. Then this is what I told them to do.

·????????If your manager is busy, then YOU set an agenda and drive the meeting.

·????????YOU talk about current job responsibilities.

·????????YOU talk about YOUR professional development.

·????????YOU talk about what you want for your future.

·????????YOU talk about how you want to get there.

·????????YOU ask your manager what areas you need to develop in.

·????????YOU send a follow up email to document what you talked about with your manager
