Strategic Brand & Marketing Manager I Leveraging Social Media & Content Marketing I Storytelling & Visual Branding
Before the UN adopted it in 1977, International Women's Day was mostly celebrated in the socialist and communist countries. Every year, the 8th of March is celebrated with a different theme. Last year in 2018, the campaign's theme was #PressforProgress. A year has gone by and though there are conversation driven around empowerment of women, I am yet to see them being implemented in most work places.
For me, 8th March is like any other day – a day of empowerment of the self. I do not need validation from my male or female “comrades” to feel empowered. It is I, me and myself who is responsible for my own empowerment. Trust me, it an ongoing process and every day counts.
However the question is whether these discussions really have an impact on me ?
I just look forward to creating a workplace that actively empowers and engages female employees in a meaningful way. I just want to feel good for the work I am doing and not be a topic of discussion because of my personal choices.
It’s time we start re-evaluating our workplace practices and making some changes. We should reject status quo just because something is the accepted norm for long. This year the theme is #balanceforbetter. As I said earlier let's all help create a #BalanceforBetter not just on the 8th of March. Throughout the year and for many more years to come.
Personally, a culture inspires me when it shows that when a woman's voice is being heard, when she participates in decision making and when she exercises leadership. A woman can bring unique aspects to the table. She can make a strong impact, bring value and quality to key decisions. Thus, a much larger impact on biggest projects. Each day is a day that we create. There is no such thing as just one special day! We win from toil of every single day. This is the only way.
So how are you empowering yourself? Tell me more.

6 年Nice article Pratika . Agree with that Woman’s empowerment is not just for one day and should be part of work culture every day. But a lot depends on the thinking of top management or the CEO/ Promoter. How much they are convinced about empowering women in leadership role is important to drive the women empowerment . In my experience in a male dominated organisation where most of the head of depts are males, and biases against women are strong ,this culture takes time to get established unless driven by Top management and supported by a strong HR dept. It’s easier to get established where there is fair representation of female leaders. Again I have seen in corporate world there is more openness to women empowerment . Noncoroporate work places like Govt organisations , educational institutions are yet to wake up to this concept. But overall things are changing although slowly. It’s a question of time , I guess .
