The Power of Vulnerability (Part 1)

Once upon a time, there was a highly respected business leader. His strategic vision was clear, his expertise undeniable, and yet, a significant portion of the organization remained disconnected. Their engagement was lukewarm, and their buy-in on his strategies was inconsistent.
Then, one day, the company hosted a guest speaker who delivered an emotionally powerful speech. As the leader stood to give his closing remarks, his voice trembled demonstrating how human and empathetic he is, a side that the organization almost never saw before. And just like that, the entire organization saw him differently. The admiration for him soared, and his legacy would be remembered for years—even after he moved on.
What was the tipping point? Expressing vulnerability.
Let's examine this other story! Early in my career, I attended a training program called "People Supporting People", designed to help us foster strong support systems through embracing vulnerability. During one session, one of the trainers shared a personal and painful story—her teenage daughter had been a victim of rape. As she spoke, she was in tears, and the room was filled with empathy.
But then, in an instant, the mood shifted. A minute after breaking down in tears, she was laughing, her tone completely transformed. The attendees, who had initially been touched by her story, started whispering among themselves, some even making fun of her. The emotional shift had been so abrupt, that her vulnerability no longer felt real.

The lesson? Vulnerability is powerful, but only when it’s authentic. Even if her emotions were genuine, the sudden detachment created a disconnect. It made the group question whether her story was real or simply manipulating emotions.
These two stories illustrate the double-edged sword of vulnerability. When genuine, it can elevate a leader to iconic status. But when forced or inconsistent, it can undermine credibility and trust.
True vulnerability isn’t about "displaying" emotions—it’s about expressing them in a way that builds trust, connection, and belief. In the upcoming episodes, we’ll explore how leaders can effectively demonstrate vulnerability without it feeling ‘cheesy’??—and how embracing vulnerability drives business and organizational growth. Stay tuned!
