The Power of Volunteering: Lessons Learned and Impact Made

Volunteering has been a transformative journey for me, shaping my outlook on life and leaving quite an impact. From my volunteer service in the Israel Defense Force as an Infantry combat soldier to public service as an SVU Criminal Prosecutor and several fundraisers for multiple causes. I've come to appreciate the profound lessons that volunteering imparts and the far-reaching effects it has on the world.

Lessons Learned from Volunteering

One of the most profound lessons I've gained from volunteering is the power of mindset. It's a choice we make, a decision to embrace either a fixed or growth mindset. Every moment presents an opportunity to determine who we want to be and how we want to contribute. This mindset resonates not only in volunteering but also in all facets of life. It reminds us that we possess the agency to choose our attitude and approach, and that we can continuously strive for personal growth and improvement.

Another invaluable lesson I've learned is the significance of giving. The act of giving is not just about assisting others; it also enhances our own well-being and personal growth. As I've come to understand, the benefit of being a good person is not just in the impact we have on others, but in the positive transformation that occurs within ourselves.

Creating moments and interactions that are meaningful has also emerged as a crucial lesson. One particular instance that remains etched in my memory is from the 1000 rep pull up challenge , when a child stood up from his wheelchair and counted to three before I lifted him up over 100 reps into the challenge. Even though I was thinking I needed to save my energy, in that profound interaction, I recognized that the most meaningful experiences are the ones we actively create for ourselves.

The Impact of Volunteering

The impact of volunteering is immeasurable, capable of changing lives both for those being helped and those offering their help. I firmly believe that engaging in acts of service infuses life and energy into all involved, leaving an indelible impact on anyone who walks into the room or dedicates their time to making a difference. The act of volunteering is transformative, empowering both the volunteers and the individuals they serve.

One of the most remarkable impacts of volunteering is the sense of community it cultivates. By coming together to volunteer, people forge connections and relationships that can last a lifetime. They become part of something greater than themselves, experiencing a profound sense of belonging and purpose. This communal bond is particularly essential for those who may feel a lack of purpose. Without purpose, we lose our sense of self and wander about without any direction.

Volunteering has a ripple effect. Observing others actively participating in acts of service inspires individuals to follow suit, creating a cycle of positivity and impact that extends far beyond the initial act of volunteering. As I firmly believe, our actions and deeds should stem from pure intentions without any hidden motives. Through acts of kindness and generosity, we cultivate space in a world that is more compassionate and considerate.

The Future of Volunteering

As our world grows more interconnected and individuals become increasingly aware of the challenges faced by their communities as well as society at large. There is a growing desire to make a difference, and volunteering provides a tangible way to achieve that purpose. Whether through traditional volunteering avenues or newer forms such as virtual or micro-volunteering, countless opportunities exist to get involved.

However, we must address certain challenges to ensure the inclusivity and sustainability of volunteering in the future. "Someone draws a circle to keep you out. Draw a bigger one to bring them back in." ("Coddling of the American Mind") Making volunteering accessible to everyone, regardless of their time or resources, is a crucial aspect of ensuring broad participation. We must find ways to support volunteers and prevent burnout, providing training, resources, and a robust support network. Recognizing and celebrating the invaluable contributions of volunteers is equally important.

The benefit of being a good person is that you get to be a good person...
