On a crisp November morning in 2012, I learned the most important lesson I'd ever learn about motivation.
I'd spent months working towards a big sales goal and never quite reached it; I knew something was missing and couldn't figure it out.
That day, I learned a lesson that's stuck with me ever since: motivation isn't something you find outside yourself. It's not in a pump-up playlist or a motivational seminar from Tony Robbins. It's rooted in something far more powerful within you: your values.
The Reality Check
Since that day, I've worked with many people who have said "I know my values". The reality was that they didn't. One such client, a business owner, wasn't making any money.
Why? He had nothing in his business values hierarchy to represent money or financial reward.
In other words, he wasn't motivated to make money and was working for free!
Now that's what I call charity.
The Universal Truth
In the world of business growth and sales, we often talk about strategies, techniques, and tools. We rarely discuss the engine that drives it all - our inner motivation. That motivation is fueled by our core values.
Let me break it down for you:
The Boom and Bust Cycle
Both towards and away from motivation hold a powerful motivation. Values that are an 'away from' motivation will lead to a boom and bust cycle. You get so far away from what you don't want, that you stop taking action.
So, how do we tap into this value-driven motivation for sustainable business growth?

Values Driven Motivation?
1. Identify Your Core Values: What is important to you in your business, career, personal life, health, in fact, every area of life? Those values are expressed as a single word that is important to you.
2. Align Your Values: Ensure your values are aligned towards what you want; e.g. money, success, fun.
3. Reframe Challenges: Instead of seeing objections as obstacles, view them as opportunities to live out your values like perseverance or problem-solving.
4. Celebrate Value-Aligned Wins: Acknowledge when your actions align with your core values, not just when deals close.
5. Connect Daily Tasks to Your Bigger Purpose: How does each call, email or meeting align with your values and long-term vision?
Imagine if you approached each day not just as a series of tasks to complete, but as opportunities to live out your values and move towards your aspirations. How would that change your energy, your persistence, your results?
The Bottom Line
The bottom line is this. Building a high performing sales team is about them sharing a common goal, where they have a team identity and, with aligned values with a 100% towards motivation.
If you have a sales team who you know can achieve much more, then maybe it's time to look inwardly at their core business and sales values.
Sustainable business growth isn't just about strategies and tactics. It's about aligning your actions with your deepest values and motivations. When you do that, you tap into a wealth of drive that can carry you through the toughest challenges and towards your biggest goals.
