The Power of Unplugging
Reflective Learnings from My Annual 3 weeks 100% Off Grid
In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, finding the elusive work-life balance can often seem like an unattainable goal. However, several years ago, when I founded CreativeCubes.Co , I made a commitment to give our members, my team, shareholders, and the board of directors 48 weeks of my undivided attention each year. The caveat? I asked for just 3-4 weeks of complete disconnection, where my phone would be turned off, and I could fully switch off from the demands of the business.
Having successfully adhered to this commitment for several consecutive years, I've discovered the incredible benefits & gains in clarity, rejuvenated energy, and a fresh mindset upon returning to Cubes.
As I prepare for each break, uncertainty often lingers. Will the allotted 3-4 weeks be sufficient? Will I need more time away? Yet, as the days leading up to my return approach, the anticipation and eagerness to dive back into the rhythm of work become palpable.
One of the most significant lessons learned during these digital detox periods is the realisation of how much time is wasted on meaningless scrolling. Without digital distractions, I've found myself with a surplus of time on my hands. The constant barrage of information we subject ourselves to on a daily basis becomes apparent only when we disconnect. While some scrolling may be necessary, much of it is time-burning and of no value.
Other values of the disconnect I’ve found have been:
Enhanced Mental Well-being
One of the primary reasons I embarked on this digital detox is the significant positive impact it has on my mental health. With no screens and incredible summer weather it was all about the ocean (surfing) for me. The cold plunge into saltwater is tough initially, but the revitalising sensation afterward is akin to medicine for the soul - at least for me it is! Making it a weekly priority to swim in the ocean has become a non-negotiable ritual, a practice that not only invigorates my body but also clears my mind (critical).
It makes me aware that constant exposure to digital devices, social media, and information overload can contribute to stress, anxiety, and burnout. Taking a break allows my mind to reset, reducing mental fatigue and promoting overall well-being.
Increased Productivity and Focus
Life as we’ve known it since 2020 has been intense to say the least. In fact I’d go on record and say that 2023 was the hardest year of the last three. All the information coming at us can be detrimental to productivity and concentration. By switching it all off (just for 3 weeks) has provided me with a break from the constant notifications, emails, and media updates, allowing me to reclaim focus.? Coming back I've found myself more present, attentive, and efficient.

Improved Sleep Quality
It's well documented that the blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the body's natural circadian rhythm, making it difficult to fall asleep and achieve restful sleep. The disconnect gave my mind a chance to unwind which led to improved sleep quality, allowing me to feel more refreshed and ready to tackle the year ahead.
Rejuvenated Creativity
I’ve got no shortage of creative ideas and spending time on the beach, walking the dogs, surfing, swimming and being in a totally relaxed mindset was fuel for my brain, fostering even more creativity and innovative thinking. I’ve found being offline sparks new ideas, perspectives, and solutions to challenges I'm in front of.
Strengthened Relationships
Over this summer I embraced the opportunity to teach my daughter how to surf. Spending three weeks dedicated to this endeavour, we surfed daily from 6am (weather permitting). Witnessing her progress, from struggling to effortlessly riding waves after intensive practice, filled me with unparalleled joy. The experience highlighted the importance of stepping outside one's comfort zone, trying new things together and embracing the process of learning as a team. Without doubt while our relationship has always been strong it's most certainly elevated with undivided attention and a passion project we both poured heart and soul into together (for ourselves and each other).?
When I share this all with friends and members of the CreativeCubes.Co community, reactions often range from disbelief to admiration. The reality is that achieving a work-life balance, especially when aiming for significant (generational) change is challenging. However, neglecting to take the time for a break can have dire consequences. The key lies in recognising that the investment in a brief period of disconnection pays off in renewed focus, creativity, and overall well-being upon returning to the daily realities.?
For me, the annual time out has become an indispensable ritual. It's not just a break from the digital world; it's a strategic investment in my mental and physical health, my relationships, and the long-term success of CreativeCubes.Co . While the challenges of work-life balance persist, the rewards of unplugging far outweigh the temporary discomfort of stepping away and I’m a huge advocate for anyone looking to try this (at least once).
I’m excited about the year ahead and understand that there will be boatloads of chaos and challenges (BAU). I just wanted to share with you what works for me hoping that maybe (maybe maybe maybe) it’ll shed some light and allow you to reflect and embrace yourself.
I hope you have an incredible year ahead and you are highly rewarded in every aspect - we have been through a lot over the past few years and I'm hopeful the dramatic changes we’ve all had to endure result in an abundance of success and happiness going forward.

10 个月Great post Tobi Skovron I first heard about this from Julian Sado -SNLP, CLC, CEIC who suggested we totally unplug from all electronic devices over a weekend every once & awhile. It calms the nervous system. Thanks for the reminder.
