The Power of Unplugging: My Month-Long Journey in China ????????

As an immigrant from China since 2012, this summer I had the unique opportunity to spend five weeks back in my homeland with my family. This journey wasn’t just about taking a break; it was an intentional effort to pass down my culture, reconnect with our extended family, and help my son practice chess, his passion, with a different group of players in another country. And you know what, I came back to work more empowered than ever with ideas and thoughts, and ready to take action! It just tells me how unplugging and fully being in the moment is essential for personal growth and meaningful connections. ?

Passing Down My Culture ??

One of the most vibrant aspects of Chinese culture is its cuisine, and my son embraced it wholeheartedly! His cultural journey began the moment we landed in Hong Kong with a big bowl of wonton noodle soup. Our culinary adventures continued in Beijing with Lanzhou stretched noodles, in Wuhan with hot dried noodles, in Chengdu with spicy shredded pork noodles, and on and on... Each city offered a unique taste and experience that connected him to our heritage.

But our journey wasn't just about food. We explored some of China's most iconic landmarks, such as the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, the Yangtze River, and the Panda Center. Each visit brought stories of history, wonder, and beauty, creating unforgettable memories.

Reconnecting with Extended Family ??

One of the highlights of our trip was reconnecting with our extended family. In our busy lives, it’s easy to lose touch with distant relatives, but this trip gave us the chance to strengthen these bonds. Watching my kids play with their cousins and listen to stories from their grandparents created memories that will last a lifetime.

And let's not forget our national favorite activity - Mahjong! ??? Playing this traditional game with my parents and kids was a wonderful way to connect across generations. It's more than just a game; it's a tradition that brings laughter, learning, and love.

Encouraging My Son’s Passion for Chess ??

My 7-year-old son has a deep passion for chess, and this trip provided a unique opportunity for him to grow with players from a different cultural background. The diverse personalities, learning styles, and strategies he encountered broadened his understanding of the game and sparked his enthusiasm even further. His emotional strength was built as he navigated the highs and lows of winning and losing. The friendships he forged with his peers and coaches will continue to grow for years to come. It was an absolute joy to see him learn and thrive in such a stimulating environment.

The Power of Unplugging ??

What I found most surprising was how this month away invigorated me. Unplugging from work and being fully present with my children and family provided me with fresh perspectives and renewed energy. It reinforced the importance of work-life balance and reminded me that taking time to disconnect is essential for personal growth and meaningful connections.
