Hello, everyone. Hope you will have (or already have had) a wonderful Thanksgiving. It’s certainly my favorite holiday! A great day, spending time (and overeating) with family and friends.
We’re going to try something different with this article. You’ve noticed by now the blank space in the title. Well, ________ is what this article is about. But we will not tell you what is in the blank space until the end of the article (please humor us-no looking ahead!).?
Let’s see if you can guess what the missing word is before you get to the end.?
And let me know if you guess right!

One of the most fascinating things to me about Thanksgiving is how it came about. The Pilgrims, who left England to escape religious persecution, first landed at the tip of Cape Cod in November 1620. After six weeks, they sailed across Cape Cod Bay to what came to be known as Plymouth, Massachusetts.?
The Pilgrims were ill-prepared for a New England winter. About half of the approximately 100 people who left England on the Mayflower died that winter.?
In March 1621, a Native American delegation met with the Pilgrims, who had taken over a recently deserted Indian settlement. At the head of the party was Massasoit, the sachem (political-military leader) of the Wampanoag confederation, a loose coalition of several dozen villages that controlled most of southeastern Massachusetts.
One Wampanoag man,?Squanto, had traveled to Europe and could speak English. He agreed to stay with the Pilgrims and teach them how to survive
He also showed them where to hunt and fish.?
Without Squanto's help, the colony probably wouldn't have survived.
?By the time fall came around, the Pilgrims were well on their way to starting a successful colony
An American tradition was born!

2 年thanks Keith! I grew up in the area and we'd go to Plimouth Plantation often in the fall, a recreated village in Plymouth MA. Then we'd see Plymouth Rock, which as every Boston area schoolkid knows isn't where they really landed ;-)
