The Power of Travel- Expanding Horizons.

The Power of Travel- Expanding Horizons.

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” ~ Mark Twain

Dear Investors and Friends,

I hope this SundayReads finds you well. As I sit here in the United States, reminiscing about the past few weeks, I can't help but reflect on the profound impact that every holiday I've taken has had on shaping the person I am today.

Traveling is not just a hobby for me; it's an essential part of my existence. Each journey brings with it a multitude of experiences, introduces me to new people, and immerses me in unfamiliar landscapes. It's a gift I cherish, as it constantly pushes me beyond my comfort zone and forces me to adapt to new surroundings. In the process, my perspectives broaden, and my mind becomes more open and receptive.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to travel extensively, exploring different cultures and embracing the unknown. And I've come to realize that this privilege goes beyond mere enjoyment and relaxation; it has tangible benefits for our mental well-being. Researchers have discovered that traveling to new places, engaging in language learning, and embracing novel experiences throughout our lives can significantly reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

During this recent holiday, I had the joy of sharing my adventures with my beloved Ma-in-law and my mother. Since my father's passing, my mother had been struggling with loneliness and depression. However, this holiday became a turning point for her. I witnessed a remarkable transformation as she rediscovered her energy and zest for life. With a newfound spring in her step and a smile that radiated pure joy, she even went on a roller coaster ride—fully embracing the thrill of the experience. Dr. Merzenich's insights into the positive effects of travel on the mind couldn't have been more accurate.

Our life experiences shape who we are, and travel is undeniably one of the most transformative experiences of all. A study conducted in 2013 compared the personalities of German college students who chose to study abroad with those who remained at their home college. The results were striking. The students who ventured abroad displayed higher levels of Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, and Openness to Experience (with decreased Neuroticism) compared to their non-traveling counterparts. Immersion in different cultures and the expansion of international networks had a profound impact on their personal growth.

Countless travel writers have shared vibrant anecdotes about the life-changing nature of travel. Whether it's the introspective journey portrayed in Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat Pray Love" or the transformative adventures of "City Slickers," these stories depict travel as an experience that can heal the spirit, shift our perspectives, and leave an indelible smile on our faces.

If you yearn for meaningful trips that leave lasting impressions, I encourage you to step outside your comfort zone. Engage in conversations with strangers, as these interactions can help you navigate the social discomfort that often accompanies travel. Instead of hastily capturing fleeting moments, take a pause and create thoughtful photographs that capture the essence of your experiences. When we venture into unfamiliar territories, our routines are disrupted, and therein lies the lesson. Embracing the uncertainties of travel can enrich our lives in unimaginable ways.

As I prepare to return to India in the coming week, I urge you to draw up a plan for that vacation you've been contemplating. Take the leap, explore new horizons, and let the transformative power of travel shape the person you will become.

Until we reconvene next week for another SundayReads, I bid you farewell from across the Atlantic.

With heartfelt emotions and warm regards,
