As a military-inspired leadership and transformational coach, I've had the privilege of serving in the Indian Army for 34 years and applying the lessons I've learned in the corporate and educational fields for the past 18 years. In these 50+ years, I've come to appreciate the power of ‘transformational leadership’ and how it can positively impact individuals, organizations, and society as a whole.
Transformational leadership is a style of leadership that focuses on inspiring and empowering individuals to achieve their full potential. It is characterized by four key elements:-
a. Individualised Consideration.
b. Intellectual Stimulation.
c. Inspirational Motivation.
d. Idealised Influence.
These elements are the four components of transformational leadership, that focus on inspiring, empowering, and influencing followers to achieve their full potential.
a. Individualised Consideration. The leader must demonstrate concern and care for each individual follower's needs, interests, and abilities. He/she should provide individual support and guidance, taking into account each follower's unique strengths and weaknesses, and provide opportunities for their growth and development.
b. Intellectual Stimulation. The leader must challenge followers to think creatively and critically, and to question assumptions and traditional ways of doing things. He/she should encourage followers to express their ideas and opinions and foster a culture of learning and innovation.
c. Inspirational Motivation. The leader must inspire and motivate followers to pursue a common vision or goal. He/she must communicate a compelling vision that inspires followers to work towards something meaningful and significant, and encourage them to overcome obstacles and challenges.

d. Idealized influence. The leader must serve as a role model and embody the values and behaviours that they expect from their followers. He/she should set high standards of ethics and morality and inspire followers to emulate their example. They earn trust and respect through their integrity and consistency.
In the Army, transformational leadership is essential for creating a cohesive and effective team that can achieve its objectives even in the most challenging environments. During my service in the military, I learned that transformational leaders must lead by example, inspire their subordinates to take ownership of their work, and empower them to make decisions that will achieve their mission.
Shared Vision. To begin with, I believe that transformational leadership is about creating a shared vision that inspires and motivates individuals to work towards a common goal. In the military, this vision is often focused on the greater good, and I have found that this same principle applies in the corporate and educational fields as well. By creating a shared vision that is bigger than any one individual, transformational leaders can inspire their team to work towards a greater purpose and make a positive impact on the world.
Lead by example. Transformational leaders must model the behavior they expect from their team. In the military, officers are expected to lead from the front, and this principle holds true in any leadership role. Leaders who are willing to work hard, take risks, and make sacrifices will inspire their team to do the same.
Communication. One of the most important lessons I learned from military service is the importance of communication. Communication is essential for building trust, sharing information, and ensuring that everyone is on the same page. In the military, communication can mean the difference between success and failure, and I have found that this holds true in the corporate and educational fields as well.
Resilience. Another key lesson I learned is the importance of resilience. In the military, we face many challenges and obstacles, and it is essential to have the resilience to push through these difficulties and come out on the other side stronger. As a transformational leader, it is essential to instill resilience in your team and encourage them to bounce back from setbacks and learn from their mistakes.
Progressive Development. Transformational leaders must be committed to personal and professional growth. By encouraging their team to constantly learn, develop new skills, and seek out new opportunities, leaders can create a culture of continuous improvement that fosters innovation and drives success. In my service I found this to be a distinction between Military and Corporate Leadership.
Build Trust. Trust is the foundation of any successful team, and transformational leaders must work hard to build and maintain trust with their team members. Leaders who are honest, transparent, and reliable will earn the trust and respect of their team, which will translate into greater engagement and productivity.
In conclusion, the power of transformational leadership is undeniable, and the lessons learned from military service can be applied to any field. On this World Transformation Day, I encourage all leaders to reflect on the power of transformational leadership and how they can apply these lessons to their own lives and work towards a better future for all.

1 年Brigadier Sushil Bhasin sir, can't agree more. It goes without saying that leading by example forms the basics but striking the right balance between the both (getting the best out of your team and doing it yourself) is crucial. Some excerpts from a book I read recently-"a leader's role is to improve the purpose, people and process of her team to ge as a high multiplier effect on her collective outcome as she can".
