As a Surrey resident and cricket fan, I was very sad to read of the death of Surrey and England legend, Graeme Thorpe this week, at just 55 years old.
The word legend gets bandied around in relation to people far less qualified to receive the accolade than Graeme - who scored 16 centuries in 100 tests for England, and made over 300 appearances for Surrey across 17 years.
Some people are born with natural talent but still need to work hard to achieve what we conceive as ‘mastery’.
There’s a well-trodden belief that you need to spend 10,000 hours practicing your craft to truly achieve this.
I’ve seen plenty of business people with natural talent who just didn’t quite have the discipline to scale to the next level.
