Why do we think, write and act in threes?
I'd offer that there's power, results and feeling that comes with threes...
Power
There is an interesting power about threes. Some even say a Rule. Per Wikipedia, "The rule of three or power of three is a writing principle that suggests that things that come in threes are funnier, more satisfying, or more effective than other numbers of things.[1]
The reader or audience of this form of text is also thereby more likely to remember the information.
This is because having three entities combines both brevity and rhythm with having the smallest amount of information to create a pattern.[2][3] It makes the author or speaker appear knowledgeable while being both simple and catchy."
Results
How can you apply this beyond writing, to actionable results?
J.D. Meier is the best-selling author of Getting Results the Agile Way. He found that "The Rule of 3 is a very simple way to get results. Rather than get overwhelmed by your tasks, you choose 3 things you want to achieve. This puts you in control. If nothing else, it gives you a very simple frame for the day. Three is an interesting number, not just in fairy tales, but I recently learned that the military uses the rule of 3 to teach survival:
- 3 minutes without air,
- 3 days without water,
- 3 weeks without food,
- 3 months without hope.
Three is the magic number."
Feelings
He also offers some quick ways to use the rule of 3: "Start your day with the rule of 3. When I wake up, the first thing I do is figure out 3 things I want to accomplish. Of course, I usually accomplish way more than that, but 3 is a way to prioritize and focus.
Feel good about results. When you end your day, note your 3 accomplishments. It’s an attitude of gratitude that builds momentum. If you didn’t accomplish the 3 outcomes you wanted, then at least you learned something. Either bite off smaller chunks or try another approach."
