The power of thinking like an Olympian
I've been glued to the Olympics lately. Naturally, I’m stunned and inspired by the dedication and physical prowess of the athletes.?
But what really strikes me is witnessing the strength of their mental game. They have focus in the face of intense pressure, flexibility with unpredictable circumstances – and most of all – grace with themselves regardless of the outcome.
It’s a powerful reminder: you can’t achieve greatness without mastering the mental game.
We feel inspired when our favorite Olympians succeed because we know how much grit and hard work went into their performance, but it’s also deeper than that.
We feel inspired because they are inspired. The source of their motivation for their sport comes from a place of true desire to succeed and do what they love.
Most of the people I work with crave this feeling in their careers.?
They want to feel excited about what they do. They want to grow and explore possibilities that help them win.
So why do they shy away from exploring opportunities that could give them that fulfillment?
Often, it’s because they are so afraid of failure or judgment that they don’t allow themselves to try.
Instead, they:
Either way, they are left feeling checked out, frustrated, and discouraged.
This creates a vicious cycle - one where you set yourself up to fail, and then blame yourself for not doing more or being more motivated.
Turns out that shame and blaming ourselves is not a winning source of motivation in the end.
You need a rock-solid mental game – one that will propel you to action and fuel true progress in your career.?
A rock solid mental game does not mean pressuring and pushing yourself to constantly do more. It’s the opposite.?
It’s about getting extremely dialed into the voice in your head and the messages that it sends you.?
My experience is that most people are overly critical of themselves and are in serious need of some inner TLC.?
I told one of my clients last week that she was approaching her life and career like a military school principal. But in reality, she’s much more of a montessori kind of girl.?
For her, a strong mental game means approaching her inner world with curiosity and kindness, instead of harshness.?
It’s about discovery and opening up to opportunity and exploration in all areas of life – inviting transformation across the board.?
When you do this you will stop settling for less than what you really want.

You will stop undervaluing yourself at work, and others will take notice.
And because your mental game allows you to entertain curiosity without feeling like you are in danger:
This isn’t about letting yourself off the hook; it’s about being kinder to yourself and getting more done because you’re motivated by genuine desire, not shame.
