The power of “thank you”

The power of “thank you”

With Thanksgiving and the holidays just around the corner here in the U.S., I’ve been spending time reflecting on the power of “thank you.” These days, everyone is incredibly busy – between working, family commitments, social media and 24/7 news – it is easy to move so quickly that you forget to pause and simply say “thank you.”

It takes five seconds to make someone feel appreciated

I believe that all people – every single one of us – wants to be seen and feel valued. Whether it is in our personal or professional lives, simply taking five seconds to say “thank you” or send someone a note or a text builds trust, fosters respect, and makes people feel appreciated.

People remember when someone stops to say, “thank you”, especially when it is from a leader. In fact, I think what sets apart good leaders from the great ones is as simple as that – great leaders take the time to truly understand the contributions of the people around them and never forget to stop and say thank you.

Think about it. Good chemistry with your team – or your customer, or even within your own family! – will be the difference between collective success or failure. What is one simple way to build that chemistry? Make sure people feel seen, heard and valued. Because people who feel appreciated are more motivated and inspired to be their best selves.

What’s more, taking the time to appreciate those around you sets the foundation for a relationship so when you actually need to work together to solve a problem, you can be comfortable to have those candid conversations more easily.

My box of gratitude

Throughout the course of my corporate career, I was blessed to receive many thank you notes. From simple sticky notes to long and thoughtful cards and letters, I have saved every single one. I keep a box by my desk that has them all. My most precious treasure is not an award or plaque; it is that box of gratitude. Those expressions of thanks inspire me to persist and move forward, even on the toughest of days.

It seems simple, but I truly believe, there are no two more powerful words than “thank you.”

The Best Practice in the entire World!. Thank you for writing this.

A powerful reminder of just how important it is to show gratitude!

Thank you! For leading by example and writing this article. I also love the word please. Similar to thank you in that it cannot be over used but is definitely under used. Happy (early) Thanksgiving!
