There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you....
The Power in Telling Our Stories
There is no greater pain than keeping an untold story locked inside you. This captures how hard it is to hide your truth and how we need to share our life experiences. Even when forces or fear try to quiet us, we feel we must speak our important stories that remain hidden. Voicing our truth can free the turmoil of burying it within. What we conceal, we cannot heal. Sharing our tale brings comfort and closeness, allowing it to fully come alive. We give our story meaning by speaking it, no longer leaving it jailed in our mind alone.
Untold Stories Weigh On Us
We all have important moments from our lives that mostly stay untold. They might be times too upsetting to tell that don’t match the story others know, or we think would be misunderstood. So we swallow them down to avoid possible judgment. But hiding our stories creates constant inner conflict. They churn inside wanting to come out. Saying our truth aloud often lifts the weight of buried stories. What we don’t say can’t be worked through.
The Power in Being Heard
Why does telling our story matter so much? Being truly seen and listened to allows a story to fully form. When received with care, being heard says our experience is real and meaningful. Instead of sitting quietly in our heart, our story is now real in the world.
There is great power in having someone truly listen as you voice hidden parts of yourself. Being heard with kindness frees our story from silent isolation. We no longer stand alone with it. This can be deeply comforting and life-changing.
Owning Our True Story
When we stay quiet, other people's versions can fill the void. People may assume things that differ from our inner truth. This separates us from who we know we are. It is brave to speak plainly about how we experienced life. This takes back our story as our own.
Untold Stories Show Partial Truths
Together, untold stories conceal important human experiences. Those facing hardship or unfairness are often silenced. When only filtered pieces are voiced, it paints an incomplete picture. Speaking honestly about our different struggles and victories fixes this. Even one story has power - it opens the way for more voices to be heard.
Breaking Free From Feeling Alone
Carrying an untold story silently can be very lonely. We feel alone in what we’ve been through, as if nobody could relate. But in sharing openly, we often find others who connect with our experience. Across divisions, hearing each other’s tales uncovers our shared humanity. Even if others did not live the same events, they can relate to the feelings and bravery involved. This helps us feel less isolated.
The Details of Life’s Journey
Life is complicated. Our experiences have many layers - unfairness, suffering, as well as moral puzzles. An untold story held within likely contains messy contradictions. But hiding it flattens the richness of who we are. Speaking up expresses the full, complex spectrum of our humanity. This adds needed depth and variety to how the human story is told.
The Barriers to Telling Our Tales
Of course, honestly telling our stories is not always easy or safe. For oppressed people, speaking out can carry big risks. And for all of us, barriers involve shame, guilt, and grief over the past. We may fear skepticism or misunderstanding from others. Care is needed in choosing to share our truth. But the right settings and caring listeners can help a story emerge.
There is strength in taking small steps to test telling parts of our story. Finding compassionate community makes a space where our unfolding story can be accepted. We might first share pieces with trusted loved ones who can sit with the complexity.
In the end, we long to be fully seen and understood. Even in a fragmented world, human ties formed through storytelling meet this core need. When we’re truly seen, we are no longer alone. We find common ground within our unique lives. I encourage you to reflect on the key stories waiting to be told within you. Your tale deserves to be heard, understood, and shared.

1 年Telling our "story" is an exciting goal Isabelle Fortin! I commend every person that have openly shared their story. SO many times, my story has been ready to hit send, but due to the sensitivity of this story, it stays on the shelf. The biggest concern is for my family and would it add value to anyone else outside of family ya know.
