The Power of Team Alignment and the Thrill of the Track

Summary: Racing showed me how alignment drives peak performance in teams, just like precision tuning in a race car.

There’s nothing quite like taking my BMW onto the racetrack, feeling the thrill of the speed, the power of the engine, and the precision of every turn. Racing has always been a true passion of mine—a place where I find focus, exhilaration, and an understanding of control that’s hard to describe. But over 20 years ago, one day on the track sparked a revelation that has shaped my approach to leadership.

As I hit the first curve and felt the tires grip the pavement, a thought crossed my mind. What if the wheels were even a little out of alignment? Imagine it. The balance would be off, the car would pull slightly, and I’d be fighting friction with every move instead of embracing pure momentum. Instead of flying down the straightaway, I’d be struggling just to stay in control. In racing, even the smallest misalignment can mean the difference between peak performance and disaster.

And then it hit me: isn’t this exactly what happens in our organizations? How often do we as leaders feel that friction—the slight pulls and drags in different directions? I thought about my own team, my own leadership. Was everyone moving in perfect sync, or were there subtle misalignments holding us back? I asked myself, What if the alignment of our team was as critical as the alignment of my car on the track? ????

"In racing, even the smallest misalignment can mean the difference between peak performance and disaster."

The Friction of Misalignment and the Cost of Disconnected Teams

That experience led me down a rabbit hole of research, and what I found was staggering. Misalignment in teams isn’t just a “soft” issue; it’s a performance killer. Studies back it up. According to McKinsey (2020), companies with highly aligned teams are 2.5 times more likely to outperform their competitors. And it’s no wonder—when every member of a team is moving in the same direction, there’s less friction, less wasted energy, and a lot more power directed at reaching goals. ??

But what happens when there’s misalignment? Friction builds up, just like that car that’s out of tune. A study by Gallup (2018) found that teams with low engagement and alignment cost the U.S. economy over $450 billion in lost productivity each year. Think about that for a second. That’s billions wasted because teams aren’t aligned. The pull of misalignment isn’t just a minor inconvenience; it’s a massive drain on resources, energy, and focus.

As I raced around the track, that concept became clearer with every turn. Alignment isn’t just a “nice-to-have”; it’s essential for any high-speed, high-impact environment. I began asking myself questions that I’ll now ask you: Is your team moving in sync? Are you feeling friction that you can’t quite identify? Just as a car requires balanced alignment for speed and safety, so does your team if you want to perform at the highest level.

McKinsey (2020): Companies with aligned teams are 2.5x more likely to outperform competitors.
Gallup (2018): Misalignment costs the U.S. economy $450 billion annually in lost productivity.

Shifting My Leadership Style and the Journey to Peak Performance

This revelation transformed the way I lead my company. Misalignment is no longer a minor issue to solve “later”—it’s a barrier to success that needs immediate attention, just like fixing an out-of-sync wheel. My leadership style shifted from managing tasks to managing alignment, ensuring that every team member not only knows their role but understands how it fits within the bigger picture.

The results have been real. According to Deloitte’s Human Capital Trends Report (2022), companies that prioritize alignment see up to a 17% improvement in productivity and a 21% increase in profitability. I’m witnessing this firsthand. When alignment is strong, momentum builds naturally, with every team member pushing in the same direction, creating exponential results. But when alignment falters, friction returns, and the journey becomes a struggle rather than a smooth race to the finish line. ??

So I’ll leave you with this question: What would happen if your team were truly aligned? How much further could you go, how much faster, and with how much less resistance? Just as every part of my BMW must work together to reach top speed on the track, so must every part of our organizations align to unlock peak performance.

Hey Rocky Lalvani... thanks for the like. In what you teach I can't imagine great profitability is achieved without strategic alignment. Correct?
