In the context of the prevailing business and economic trends, sustainable energy refers to energy sources that are considered environmentally friendly and can be replenished naturally over time, without depleting finite resources or causing significant harm to the environment. This is also referred to as “green energy”.
The renewable sources like solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass are examples of sustainable energy because they have minimal or no carbon emissions; use naturally occurring processes and are virtually inexhaustible on human timescales.
During the past 50 years, human activity has significantly impacted on the rate of environmental degradation which saw an escalation in the rate of pollution of air, water, and other natural resources.
The goal of sustainable energy therefore is to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and promote a cleaner, more environmentally responsible energy future.
Endowed with strong mental fortitude, tenacity, innovative ideas, technologically savvy, and the will to get things done, the youth of today in Malawi (and globally) have the potential to change the direction of the ship towards achieving greater outcome than hitherto, if well supported through empowerment.
Transitioning to renewable sources.
Sustainable energy is crucial for maintaining ecological balance in our economy. By shifting to renewable sources like solar and wind, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize environmental impact. This helps preserve ecosystems and supports a healthier planet for future generations.
Investing in renewable energy sources has the potential to create a wide range of jobs across many sectors, with agriculture, and renewable energy sectors, leading the way. Additionally, these initiatives have potential to reduce energy costs for businesses and households, freeing up resources for other economic activities, thus contributing to economic empowerment, thereby forging a win-win perspective for both the environment and the economy.
Sustainable Energy in Small to Medium-Scale Agriculture:
Having the above synopsis in mind, use of sustainable energy has enormous benefits towards supporting commercial activities, and in this context; I have considered ten of as many benefits as outlined below:
Cost Saving:?Sustainable energy sources like solar or wind power has potential to significantly reduce energy costs by up to 60%. Reduced energy costs therefore can make farming more economically viable for young farmers, contributing to their financial stability and long-term success.
?
Economic Empowerment:?By adopting sustainable energy practices, young farmers and entrepreneurs can generate additional income out of scaled production and realisation of volume-based economies of scale.

Environmental Impact:?Sustainable energy reduces greenhouse gas emissions, helping combat climate change and promoting environmentally responsible farming, which benefits the entire ecosystem.
Improved Efficiency:?Embracing sustainable energy technologies coupled with enhanced resource management translates to higher agricultural productivity, resource conservation, and waste reduction.
Skills Development:?Integrating renewable energy systems into farming operations offers valuable technical skill-learning and building opportunities and enhancing the employability of youth in the agricultural sector.
Resilience:?Reliable access to sustainable energy sources helps to stabilise agricultural operations, enhancing the resilience of small-scale agricultural operations, and ultimately contributing to food security.
Community Development:?Youth-led sustainable energy initiatives have enormous potential to boost local economies and foster community engagement around environmental issues and sustainable practices.
Access to Markets:?Sustainable practices aligns with market demands for eco-friendly products, providing young farmers with a competitive edge. Meeting the growing demand for these eco-friendly products positions young farmers to tap into market trends favouring sustainable and responsibly produced goods.
Education and Awareness:?Youth involvement in sustainable energy ventures, helps to raise awareness about the importance of renewable energy, hence educates communities about renewable energy's significance and potential.
Empowerment:?Ultimately, by enabling young farmers to harness sustainable energy, they gain more control over their operations, leading to increased innovation towards becoming leaders in sustainable agricultural practices, thereby fostering a bright future for agriculture and the environment.
Conclusion:
By recognizing and exploiting on these benefits, societies stand to reap the benefits associated with use of sustainable energy, and achieve the right balance in achieving youth empowerment, environmental sustainability, and realise positive social capital connectivity with the communities within the ecosystems the enterprises operate in.?
