The Power of Story Telling
Studies showed that our memories would retain more information if it comes in the form of a story. In some cases, we have to understand and grasp the meaning of a certain kind of information, which is vital to our business. As an example of what I am saying, read the below story that I have created to help people understand the fourteen values of leadership in one of the best organizations in nowadays, Amazon.
I named the story: "My First Research Assignment":
"One of the best quality of any researcher is to be Curios and Eager to Learn," this was the statement that our professor used when he gave us our first research assignment, "you have to Dive Deep, if you want to get the best knowledge in any subject, you have to make your hands dirty, try it yourself," he added.
I did like to subject; it was about the relationship between Human Behavior and Business Success.
I decided to go and meet my uncle, who was my idol for a businessman. He was known for his Frugality; he did fantastic accomplishments with minimal resources. My mom used to tell me that I always insisted on the highest standards on every single task I used to do, "You are just like your uncle!". When I reached his office, I saw him walking between the employees' desks, tapping in their shoulders, smiling at them. This is how he earned their trust; he was very close to them. When he saw me, he waved to me to join him. We went to his office, and I told him about my project. "I like this assignment!" he said," how can I help?". Then one of his managers crashed our meeting, "I was right! We have got it!" the lady was thrilled. My uncle smiled:" Hire the best, work on them, write this down on your findings."
When the lady left the office, after she took some direction from him, my uncle explained the situation: "Martha is known for her Customer Obsession, we have been receiving a lot of complaints about a certain product, it was in one of the production lines she is responsible for; she was very upset." My uncle settled in his chair, and he continued:" she came to me and said that she would take ownership of this issue, I told her that the problem is with the rapping stage, she disagreed and committed to proving her point." My uncle stressed the importance of delivering results in any successful business." No matter who is wrong and who is right, our core is to provide the best results to our customers." I did record this in my findings. He apologized and promised me to continue our discussion later. He had a meeting.
During my ride back to my dorm, I started thinking and analyzing: all the people who work for my uncle are biased for action; he had this innovative idea that it was simple to implement. The trigger was his ability to think big. In summary, he was able to think out-of-the-box with limited resources and created and healthy working environment and select the best talents. No wonder why his company evolved from producing a single product to be part of a large organization; they appreciated his way of doing business.
I am looking forward to my next meeting with him. It is getting clear to me now, the more personal involvement you have in your business, the better it is for you and your business.

4 年I have read three books on stories and story telling which I recommend. "The Story Telling Animal", "The Story Factor", and "Wired for Story". I recommend the first if you want to just pick one. As for memories, I learned a nice equation the other day: Information + Emotion = Memory I believe when stories provide information filled with emotions, they become long term memories.
