The Power of Social Media

As I woke up this morning, I had missed several text messages from a chain with my brother and our good friend. Knowing my friends and family, I assumed I missed something related to sports (most likely Iowa State) or something very comical. The latter became the truth. The below scenario and context played out to be a FANTASTIC reminder of the power of Social Media and Perception. (***WARNING, the second link contains foul language***)
One of my childhood and lifelong friends, Andrew Murdoch, is raising money for the Boys and Girls Club of Story County. In doing so, the below uplifting video was created.

Unfortunately or fortunately (depending on your sense of humor and like or dislike for the Boys and Girls Club), someone interpreted some of the video as the act of a young, over-served, college student (Sorry Andrew, young and your name are not typically utilized together).

The not safe for work video has attracted over 750,000 views in 3 days. While I would love to say the first video has too, that simply is not the case. I don't know the magical algorithm to change this equation but I do think there is some value in this message. As I think of my life, I can relate this underlying message to work, parenting, my kids, and many other areas. I hope you found some humor in the chance happenings of this situation, as well as found some food for thought on the crazy world we live in.
As I put my final thoughts in writing, here are my takeaways:
- Thank goodness (for myself and my associates) that AOL discs were the only form of social media back in 'our day'.
- The internet is always on and a camera phone is only a swipe away.
- Your digital footprint could potentially last forever.
- Utilize social media to your benefit, it can quickly spread, the good or not so good, word.
