Power of smile :-)
Growing up and as a young adult, I remember always having a smile in my face. I only know this now because I was reminded of this trait-not because I was consciously trying to put on smiles.
It was so obvious at times that people I met would be curious and ask me why I always smile or even better, someone once said to me while at university: 'I came for this lecture in bad mood, but, when I met you and your smile, that cheered me up'. Someone at work recently enough stopped me to ask me how come I always have a smile in my face. I never reflected much until I read a #hbr article about the importance of smiling in the workplace. In fact, there are dozens of articles about smile here and in multiple locations on teh web.
It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our daily tasks. We often operate in the realm of deadlines, back-to-back meetings and high stress which can make the workplace feel like a pressure cooker at times. In the midst this chaos, there's a powerful tool that can make a significant difference: #smiling.
We often underestimate the impact of smiles on the workplace environment. They might appear as small gestures, but their effects may be profound. Smiles can foster a positive culture, enhance teamwork, and improve overall productivity.
Building Trust: A smile is universally recognised as a sign of warmth and friendliness. People who smile are generally regarded as more trustworthy (not sure why but research has shown that smiling females are regarded as more trustworthy than smiling males...). When we greet colleagues or team members with an honest smile, it instantly puts them at ease. A genuine smile comes from the unconscious mind so, it cannot be faked (we smile by contracting the zygomatic major muscles which, when contracted, lift the corner(s) of our mouths but always look at the eyes as, orbicularis oculi muscles when contracted create the so called crow-feet phenomenon and this cannot be faked-or at least that is what science tell us)!
Trust is the foundation of any successful relationship, and a simple smile can go a long way in building and maintaining that trust.
Boosting Morale: At times, work can be challenging, and we all have our moments of stress (and frustration). An honest #smile from a coworker can boost morale during tough times. In addition, it shows that you care and, it may turn a bad day into a better one. Interestingly, even looking at people who smile, may have a positive effect on people.
Enhancing Communication: Effective communication is key in workplace. Smiles create an open and welcoming atmosphere, making it easier for employees to share ideas, ask questions, and voice concerns. Comfortable people are more likely to engage in meaningful conversations.
Increasing Productivity: Happier employees are more productive. When people feel appreciated and valued, they tend to put in more effort and work more efficiently. Smiles can create a positive feedback loop, where increased productivity leads to even more smiles.

Improving Customer Relations: In customer-facing roles, a smile can make or break a deal. Customers are more likely to trust and engage with people who project positivity. A smile can set the tone for a successful relationship.
Reducing stress: Smiles are stress busters! Research shows that smiling when you're stressed can decrease anxiety and lessen tension. When you smile, even in stressful situations, it triggers the release of endorphins. This not only helps you cope with stress but also positively affects those around you.
Fostering Inclusivity: Smiles are a universal language that transcends cultural barriers. Regardless of where your colleagues or clients come from, a smile is a gesture of inclusivity and respect. It signals a welcoming environment for everyone.
Setting a Leadership Example: Leaders who smile, set a positive tone for the entire organisation. When leaders show genuine warmth and appreciation, it encourages employees to do the same. It's a leadership trait that can inspire others to follow.
Finishing up: the power of a smile in the workplace (but also broader) cannot be underestimated. It's a simple yet invaluable tool that can transform your workplace culture for the better. We should all make an effort to bring more smiles into your lives. It costs nothing but can fuel positivity, improve relationships, and foster a more productive and enjoyable work environment for all.

Thanks Agron Hasani for sharing your smile! Your post made think of an excerpt from Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking fast and slow: ‘“For example, being amused tends to make you smile, and smiling tends to make you feel amused. Go ahead and take a pencil, and hold it between your teeth for a few seconds with the eraser pointing to your right and the point to your left. Now hold the pencil so the point is aimed straight in front of you, by pursing your lips around the eraser end. You were probably unaware that one of these actions forced your face into a frown and the other into a smile. College students were asked to rate the humor of cartoons from Gary Larson’s The Far Side while holding a pencil in their mouth. Those who were ‘smiling’ (without any awareness of doing so) found the cartoons funnier than those who were ‘frowning’. Simple common gestures can also unconsciously influence our thoughts and feelings.” Keep smiling!
