The power of showing up
United Way Greater Toronto
Working with communities in Peel, Toronto & York Region
For Megan Shortreed, Partner at Paliare Roland Rosenberg Rothstein LLP, community is built by showing up and leadership starts with honesty.??
"The buzzword now is authenticity, but really, it's about being honest — with yourself, your team and the people you serve," she shares.??
Women are often socialized to soften their voices, but she believes being direct and constructive is a strength. "When we give honest feedback in the spirit of collaboration and understanding, we create space for real change."?
Raised in a home where community service was a way of life, Megan sees philanthropy as an opportunity to challenge old ways of thinking and unlock human potential.?
"I was privileged to grow up in a middle-class home that valued education, particularly for women. But not everyone has that opportunity," she says. "I support Women United because they focus on breaking down barriers — helping women access housing, education, job training and safety from violence."?
Through Women United, she sees firsthand how investing in women uplifts entire communities. "When women do well, their children, their neighbourhoods and our economy thrive. It’s about systemic change."?
For Megan, community is built by showing up. "The best advice I ever got was: ‘Good things in life go to people who show up.’ Whether it's for family, colleagues or your neighbourhood, being present and engaged makes a difference."?
With the needs in the GTA evolving rapidly, she reminds others to get involved. "Find a way to engage, no matter how big or small. Show up. Together, we can accelerate action and create a stronger future for all women."?
