The Longing to Belong: Insights from Howard Partridge, Author of The Power of Community, on Critical Mass Radio Show

People long to belong. Leaders who build a culture of true community in the workplace tap into that powerful need to connect – leading to soaring levels of employee engagement. Author Howard Partridge joins us to discuss how he highlights this in his book The Power of Community. Here are three takeaways from our time with Howard Partridge on Critical Mass Radio Show:

1. Treat employee engagement as a competitive advantage. On the contrary, realize that employee disengagement can be a huge disadvantage to your firm. All human beings, and thus all employees, long to belong. They want to feel important, accepted and loved, and seek to feel like their work has meaning. When they don’t feel these things in their job, they will direct their attention, and their energy, elsewhere, which can prove problematic for the culture of your firm. However, when your team is inspired, you will reap the rewards, as their engagement will result in taking better care of your customers which will then lead to higher profits. Your level of employee engagement isn’t predestined; there are actions you can implement to increase engagement in your firm today. When practiced, employee engagement is self--reinforcing, and builds upon itself.

2. Success is all about relationships. While on the show, Howard Partridge explained that you can have everything you want in life if you help others get to what they want in life. Build connections with others, as you never know what the future will bring to any professional relationship. Add value to others, and value will be added to you in return.

3. Have something meaningful to say. When it comes to writing a book, Howard Partridge shared that nothing matters more than having the commitment and desire to do so, and adding value to your audience through the meaning of your book. Everything else–--from the writing process to finding a publisher--–can be learned. All you must start with is a reason to write a book, and the motivation to do so.
