When we experience a setback, we tend to either become defensive and blame others or berate ourselves. Neither response is helpful.
Research shows that we should instead act with self-compassion. Be kind to ourselves rather than judgmental when considering our inadequacies, failures, or setbacks.
Most people want to self-improve, and self-compassion is crucial for that to happen.
What if we were to treat ourselves like a friend who made a mistake or experienced a setback? More likely than not, we would be kind, understanding, and encouraging. Directing that kind of response internally toward ourselves is known as self-compassion.?
People with high levels of self-compassion demonstrate three behaviors:

Psychologists have discovered that self-compassion helps us cultivate a growth mindset by encouraging the belief that improvement?is possible and bolstering our desire to do better.
It also creates a sense of self-worth because it makes people genuinely care about their well-being and recovery after a setback.
William James, one of Western psychology's founding fathers, once wrote, “The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” Luckily, we can meet this essential need without depending on others to approve of us. When we treat ourselves with the same kindness we treat our loved ones, we will have the support and care required to catapult us to live a happy and fulfilled life.
