The Power of Self-Belief: From Reliable Supporter to Confident Leader
Karima-Catherine shared with me how she often felt like the supporting actor in her own life story. For years, she was the one who could always be relied upon to get things done—taking on the challenging tasks, solving problems, and making sure projects were delivered. But despite her track record of success, KC never saw herself as a leader. She was always behind the scenes, supporting someone else’s vision.
This story is not unique. Many of us—whether we’re CEOs, founders, or leaders in any field—can relate to being the reliable supporter. We’ve all been there, quietly getting things done while the spotlight seems to shine on others. But I’m here to tell you that it’s time to rewrite that narrative.
The truth is, leadership isn't something someone gives to you. It’s a choice we make for ourselves. KC’s turning point came when she started questioning the story she had been telling herself. "Why can't I be the leader?" she asked. She realized that the only thing holding her back was her own perception.
Leadership is not about titles. It’s about the ability to influence, to inspire, and to guide others. And it starts with how you see yourself. Karima-Catherine Goundiam.
Here are the key steps that can help you embrace your leadership potential:
As KC continues her journey, she is not only growing her business but is also inspiring those around her to see their own leadership potential. The same qualities that made her an excellent supporter—reliability, problem-solving, and dedication—are now recognized as core leadership qualities.
This is something we, as founders and CEOs, have the power to cultivate in ourselves and in our teams. By sharing our stories and encouraging others to embrace their leadership roles, we create a culture of empowerment that will strengthen our entire organization.
To all the "supporters" out there who secretly dream of leading—your time is now. You’ve always had the qualities of a leader within you. Now it’s time to let them shine. As KC says:
The choice is yours. Step into the spotlight of your own story. Karima-Catherine Goundiam.
Let’s empower ourselves and others to lead, not just support, and make a lasting impact.
Fictional Journal Entry of Catherine de’ Medici
5th December 1560, Chateau de Blois, France
Tonight, as the bells of Saint-Denis toll for my son, King Francis, I find myself burdened by shadows both ancient and new. His frail heart, never meant to bear the weight of a crown, has left France vulnerable, and I, a widow once more, must shield this fragile kingdom. Yet, as I prepare to wield power in his stead, the ghosts of my past pull at my resolve.
As a child in Florence, I was orphaned before I could even comprehend the cruelty of fate. My parents’ deaths left me a pawn in a family of giants—tools of power and ambition. In their absence, I grew up under watchful eyes, not as a cherished girl but as a vessel of Medici pride. The whispers of my worthlessness haunted me, a child cast adrift in palaces gilded yet cold.

Now, as Regent of France, I see the same games played on a larger stage. The courtiers murmur of my foreign birth and my reliance on astrologers. They question whether a woman, one who hails from bankers rather than kings, can rule. The fear of rejection, of being cast aside as I once was, claws at my mind.
Yet, I know this: France teeters on the brink of ruin. The religious wars are no longer distant echoes but an inferno threatening to consume us all. The Protestant and Catholic factions pull this kingdom apart like wolves tearing at flesh. I will not allow it.
My childhood fears of rejection and irrelevance now fuel my determination. I will not be a figurehead, nor will I let this land, which I have come to love as my own, fall into chaos. I will use every tool at my disposal—diplomacy, marriage alliances, even the darker arts of manipulation if I must.
To overcome my fears, I must embrace them. Where others see weakness in my gender, I see the advantage of underestimation. The courtiers forget that I have observed the workings of power from the shadows, that I have mastered the art of patience. Like the Florentine chess players of my youth, I shall move with calculated precision, sacrificing what must be lost to secure the future.
Even as I mourn my son tonight, I am resolved. I will stand firm in the face of those who doubt me. I will navigate this storm not for personal gain but to preserve the unity of this kingdom. If the Medici blood running through my veins taught me anything, it is this: adversity tempers the strongest steel.
When I close my eyes, I see the faces of my departed children, the legacy of my house, and the faces of the French people who look to the crown for guidance. I will not fail them. For every moment of despair, I find strength in the conviction that my survival, my very presence, is proof that I can endure anything.
Come what may, I shall lead with courage, for in courage lies the only hope for salvation.
