We all have grown up hearing our parents say or our teachers preaching that self belief is one of the most important ingredients for you to succeed.
A couple of days back, I was introspecting about leadership, when I fumbled upon this theory reckoned as the Golem Effect. Well, after reading this theory, I quite evidently got my answers. I understood that the concept of self belief doesn't only spring up from the moral science class of our school or Hindu mythology, instead, it also has its roots embedded in science.
Golem effect is a psychological phenomenon which states that lower expectations placed upon the individual lead to lower performance.
Further reading about this theory, made me realise that as a leader, one should always encourage their team members to stay motivated, keep boosting their morale and pump them up with words of encouragement. In case of any crises, overburdening the sub-ordinates or speaking in derogatory tone would not lead to any resolution. Instead, it would further dampen the problem. Thus, the theory exemplifies that if a leader trusts his employees then only will the employees cultivate the power of self belief and deliver phenomenal results.
Moreover, thinking ahead, I realised that sometimes, we humans, in our organisational role or in our family responsibilities, yearn for an outer voice that tells us that we support you and we believe in your prowess. This voice acts as a bastion of encouragement. Sometimes, we simply need to stop listening to the voice that makes us feel inadequate or incompetent and instead open our doors to the ray of hope called self belief. This power of self belief is contagious, so remember, the more you encourage others to believe in their capabilities, the more stronger you will become from within.
