Transitioning from military to civilian life can be a challenging and stressful experience. As someone who has gone through this process, I understand firsthand the possible difficulties. However, through my struggles, I discovered the power of self-affirmation, a technique that can significantly benefit our mental well-being.
Self-affirmation is reflecting on and affirming our core values, strengths, and positive qualities. It is a powerful tool that can help reduce the perceived threat of negative feedback or criticism, lowering feelings of defensiveness and increasing openness to new ideas or perspectives.
Over the last few years, I have continued using self-affirmation and found that it can be incredibly beneficial in many ways. Here are some of the benefits of practicing self-affirmation:
1. Decreased health-deteriorating stress: Stress significantly contributes to many health problems, but self-affirmation can help reduce stress levels and minimize its negative impact on our bodies.
2. Control self-sabotaging thoughts and speech: We all have moments of negative self-talk, but self-affirmation can help us control those negative thoughts and replace them with more positive ones.
3. Reduced anxiety: Anxiety is a common issue, but practicing self-affirmation can help reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm.
4. Improved mood: Self-affirmation can help improve our overall mood and create a more positive outlook.

5. Promoted self-coping: By affirming our strengths and abilities, we can build resilience and increase our ability to cope with challenges.
6. Enhanced self-esteem: Self-affirmation can promote a sense of self-worth and enhance our self-esteem, positively impacting all aspects of our lives.
7. Improved problem-solving under stress: When we practice self-affirmation, we are better equipped to handle problems and challenges, even in stressful situations.
8. Helped see the world through other perspectives: Self-affirmation can promote a growth mindset and help us see things from different perspectives, increasing empathy and understanding.
9. Changed outcomes: By focusing on positive affirmations, we can change the narrative in our minds and improve our outcomes in different areas of our lives.
We can reduce stress, anxiety, and negative self-talk by reflecting on our values, strengths, and positive qualities. We can also enhance our coping skills, problem-solving abilities, and self-esteem. So, next time you feel stressed or worried, take a moment to change the narrative in your head through self-affirmation. It truly works.

9 个月These are sound tactics not only for those of us who transitioned or are transitioning from military to civilian life but really for anyone making a significant life change. With some alterations to accommodate the audience, I use much of these very concepts while working with my middle school students to prepare life beyond the classroom. Young? Yes, but considering how short the time is from where they are to where they’ll be, it’s never too soon to instill these words of wisdom.

When you enter the job market well prepared, your confidence soars...this is what my training was all about. I wrote a book on my training, "Employment after Deployment" on Amazon. The other characteristic of successful job seekers is networking...I know, I know, everybody tells you that but there are a few simple "laws of networking" that can make all the difference! Best luck to all in transition and happy holidays
