"The recent suspension of 16 electricity officials in the region due to negligence in revenue collection and the implementation of a one-time settlement scheme has once again brought to light the deep-rooted corruption within our power distribution companies.

While this action is commendable, it merely scratches the surface of a much larger problem. The involvement of contract workers in illegal activities, such as demanding bribes for new connections, highlights the systemic nature of this issue.

It is evident that the department has failed to create a work environment where its employees, especially junior engineers and sub-divisional officers, feel empowered to perform their duties honestly. Instead, a culture of fear and corruption has prevailed, leading to a decline in service quality and a loss of public trust.

To address this crisis, we need a comprehensive overhaul of the system. This includes:

  • Stricter accountability: Implementing robust mechanisms to hold officials accountable for their actions.
  • Transparency: Promoting transparency in all operations, including financial transactions.
  • Employee empowerment: Creating a work environment where employees feel valued and protected.
  • Citizen engagement: Encouraging citizens to report corrupt practices without fear of retaliation.
  • Widespread corruption: The entire system, from top to bottom, is implicated.
  • Exploitation of contract workers: These workers are used as tools for bribery and illegal activities.
  • Neglect of duties: The suspended officials were found to be negligent in their duties, impacting revenue collection and service delivery.
  • Call for systemic change: The situation highlights the need for a broader overhaul of the system.
