Power of Rural: Bridging Gaps and Advancing Maternal Health - National Rural Health Day 2024

November 21, 2024, is National Rural Health Day (NRHD)—a day to observe and highlight the unique healthcare challenges faced by rural communities, and the critical role rural healthcare providers play in ensuring access to care. This year, we aim to raise awareness to the need for improved resources and support for rural healthcare, while honoring the dedication and resilience of those who serve these communities.

Rural America is home to nearly 60 million people, yet these areas often face significant barriers to care. NRHD provides an important platform to bring attention to these issues and celebrate those committed to ensuring rural communities have access to the care they need.

What Rural America Healthcare Needs:

  1. Increase the Number of Physicians in Rural America - Only 10% of physicians practice in rural communities. But, 25% of Americans live outside of metropolitan areas.
  2. Increase Care for Children - About 24% of children in rural settings are battling poverty.
  3. Work to Keep Rural Hospitals Viable - Within the past 25 years, more than 470 rural hospitals have shut down due to loss?of funding.
  4. Treatment for Hypertension in Rural America - Risk for hypertension is much higher in rural areas. Factors such as isolation and?overall aging may be contributing to this risk.

The 2024 Focus: Maternal Health in Rural Communities

The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) has chosen “Advancing Maternal?Health in Rural Communities” as this year’s theme, bringing much-needed attention to an?issue that affects families at the most critical stages of life.

This theme shines a light on the importance of collaborative solutions to ensure that rural mothers and their babies can thrive.

Why National Rural Health Day Matters

National Rural Health Day (NRHD) is more than just a celebration; it’s a critical call to action. It?serves as a reminder of the disparities in healthcare access and outcomes that rural?communities face, and the ongoing efforts required to address these challenges. NRHD?highlights the resilience and dedication of rural healthcare providers while advocating for systemic improvements to ensure equitable healthcare for all.

Rural Communities are Integral to America

Rural areas are not just picturesque landscapes—they’re vibrant communities that form the backbone of the nation. However, these communities often operate?under significant challenges. National Rural Health Day shines a spotlight on the?healthcare professionals and organizations that continue to provide essential?services, even amid declining resources, economic hardships, and public health?crises like the opioid epidemic. These individuals and institutions are the unsung?heroes who ensure the well-being of rural populations.

Challenges Facing Rural Healthcare:

Hospital Closures and Staffing Shortages

Rural hospitals face a dual challenge of financial instability and workforce?retention. Many hospitals struggle with insufficient reimbursements from Medicare?and Medicaid, exacerbated by the financial strain of addressing the opioid?epidemic. These economic pressures often lead to hospital closures. For those that?remain open, recruiting and retaining skilled surgeons and physicians is an uphill?battle. Many healthcare professionals leave rural areas for urban centers offering?higher salaries and specialized opportunities.

Poverty and Its Impact

Poverty disproportionately affects rural communities, where average incomes are?significantly lower than in urban areas. Economic decline, due to factors like the?closure of industries and farms, often leads to increased behavioral health issues?and migration of younger residents to cities. Moreover, rural communities of color?face additional barriers, such as living in “food deserts,” which contribute to higher?rates of chronic conditions like hypertension and cardiovascular disease

A Call To Action

National Rural Health Day is a chance to unite in support of rural healthcare. It’s a moment to?advocate for policies that address funding gaps, promote healthcare access, and tackle?systemic inequities. By uplifting rural healthcare providers and their communities, we work?toward a stronger, healthier America.
