These transactions are then grouped into a single batch as one final result of all these transactions. The batched transactions (result), along with a proof (for ZK Rollups), are submitted to the Ethereum mainnet. The Ethereum mainnet verifies the batch using fraud-proofs (for Optimistic Rollups) or validity proofs (for ZK Rollups) and finalizes the transactions. This method significantly enhances transaction throughput, reducing costs and congestion on the Ethereum network.

Applications and Benefits of Rollups

Rollups offer numerous advantages and are applicable in various blockchain sectors. By processing transactions off-chain, rollups dramatically increase the transaction capacity of Ethereum, supporting thousands of transactions per second. Reduced congestion leads to lower gas fees, making blockchain transactions more affordable. Despite being processed off-chain, transactions retain the security of the Ethereum mainnet. Faster transaction processing and lower fees contribute to a more user-friendly experience. Rollups are particularly beneficial for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, non-fungible token (NFT) platforms, gaming, and supply chain management, where high transaction volumes can otherwise lead to significant congestion and costs.

Future of Rollups

The future of rollups looks promising, especially with the upcoming Ethereum 2.0 upgrades, which aim to further enhance scalability through sharding. The combination of Eth2 and rollups could potentially increase Ethereum's transaction capacity to 100,000 transactions per second. As rollup technology matures, we can expect advancements in security, privacy, and interoperability, making them even more integral to the blockchain ecosystem.
