The Power of the Reverse Interview: Empowering Potential Employees to Evaluate Employers

In today's competitive job market I've noticed the changing dynamics of job interviews as potential employees are increasingly aware of the importance of workplace culture, growth opportunities, and alignment with personal values. The traditional interview process, where candidates solely answer questions, falls short of addressing these crucial aspects. Enter the reverse interview, a powerful approach where candidates like me interview their potential employers.

Why Potential Candidates Should Interview Employers

  1. Cultural Fit: Beyond skills and experience, cultural fit is paramount. A reverse interview allows candidates to gauge whether the company’s culture aligns with their values, work style, and long-term career goals. God forbid you join a culture where they have team Happy Hour every Thursday after work and you can never make it because you simply don't drink. I don't care about sports, so for someone to ask me my favorite team in an interview does not align with my personal interests. Maybe a culture where you have a team lunch every 3rd Thursday, or where you have an annual wellness and training retreat is more attractive.
  2. Growth Opportunities: Candidates should seek to understand the company's commitment to employee development. Asking about training programs, mentorship opportunities, and career advancement paths can provide invaluable insights. I've interviewed a place where nobody has had promotion in 2 years because there simply wasn't room for growth beyond the current role. Yikes! However, as a manager I've attracted talent by disclosing my management style and how I develop talent.
  3. Work-Life Balance: In an era where work-life balance is increasingly prioritized, understanding an employer’s stance on flexible work arrangements, remote work policies, and overall work environment is crucial. A supervisor who is older or is also a parent (if you have children) and understands you may be more suitable than someone younger with no children. Just sayin'.
  4. Management Style: The relationship with direct supervisors and the management team significantly impacts job satisfaction. Candidates should inquire about leadership styles, team dynamics, and management’s approach to feedback and support. Some bosses are NOT leaders and should not have direct reports. They don't enjoy it and everyone can tell. Whereas, others are like second moms etc., so choose your boss wisely. Choose a leader.

With the above said....here are 7 questions I've asked potential employers during interviews:

  1. I've read through the website and learned the company's core values. Can you tell me how they are integrated into daily operations?
  2. Can you provide examples of career paths and advancement opportunities within the organization?
  3. How does the company support professional development and continuous learning?
  4. What measures are in place to ensure a healthy work-life balance for employees?
  5. Can you describe the team dynamics and the management style of my potential direct supervisor?
  6. What are the biggest challenges faced by your company/department today?
  7. Can you give me an example of how you live out the company values? You'd be surprised how some people freeze when asked this question.

Benefits of the Reverse Interview

For candidates, the reverse interview empowers them to make informed decisions, ensuring they choose an employer that aligns with their career aspirations and personal values. For employers, it signals a progressive and inclusive culture, attracting top talent who are genuinely interested in contributing to the organization's success.

As the interview process continues to evolve, the reverse interview stands out as a critical tool for both candidates and employers. It fosters transparency, mutual respect, and a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of a team. By embracing this approach, candidates can find workplaces where they thrive, and employers can build stronger, more committed teams.

In today's job market, I'm learning that it’s not just about being the right candidate for the job (as all of my recruiters tell me); it’s about finding the right job for you. Empower yourself with the reverse interview and take control of your career journey. Hopefully we can get back to pursuing our "Dream Job" by spending a little time and asking the right questions to ensure we only take positions that we truly feel are the perfect match for us.

I feel there are some great points in here even for blue collar workers, like myself, so that one doesn’t feel stagnant and actually joins a team and move up!
