"Resonance"
This is how prospects can tell if you're in it for them, or for you.
Resonance is the sense of genuine connection and alignment between the sales rep and the prospect. It’s that intangible quality where the prospect feels the sales rep truly understands their needs, cares about their goals, and is committed to providing a solution for their benefit—not just to make a sale.
When a salesperson resonates with a prospect, there’s a shared energy or vibe that comes through as authenticity, trustworthiness, and empathy. Resonance means being in sync with the prospect’s concerns, motivations, and desired outcomes rather than pushing a one-size-fits-all pitch.
The Truth About Authenticity
But here’s the thing: You can’t fake true resonance.
Trying to “act” like you care, using a rehearsed tone, "intending to say things a certain way to elicit an emotional response," or "pretending" to align with a prospect’s needs all may work—but is that really what being there for your prospect is all about?
Pretending to align with a prospect’s needs, even with the intention to do what's right for the prospect, compromises true resonance.
For example, if you're modeling line for line, word for word, tone for tone what a “gooroo” is doing, even with good intentions, it’s hard to argue that this approach is truly authentic.
Why? Because you're trying to copy a certain way—not be a certain way.
Authenticity is called that for a reason: it’s real. It doesn't need to be manufactured, and prospects can detect when it’s missing, even when you’re good at hiding it.
It’s how a prospect unwittingly perceives the true intentions behind the interaction, even if they can’t fully articulate it. It’s that spidey sense that tells them whether they’re genuinely valued or just another notch on the sales board.
Rethinking Sales Resistance
Maybe that "sales resistance" has nothing to do with your product, service, or even what you're saying or how you're saying it. Maybe it stems from a disconnect in resonance, driven by deep-seated motivations that reveal themselves through subtle cues in your behavior and energy.
When we, as sales professionals, take the time to understand our own motivations and ensure we’re coming from a place of genuine care and service, that’s when true resonance happens. That’s when we show prospects that we’re in it for them, not just for ourselves.
The Source of True, Unadulterated Authenticity
Here’s the big question though…
How are we to be that, without having to “try”?
From where does actual, wholesome resonance spring? From where does having the natural bent towards doing what’s best for others sprout?
Here is probably the more unpopular, but nonetheless deeper truth and answer to that question:
We can't conjure up this authenticity on our own.
We don’t just “create more of it.”
True, unadulterated authenticity comes only from the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives—whether we have a relationship with Jesus or not. (And whether we like it or not).
We are spiritual beings and therefore can be moved and guided by a Spiritual God—whether by His presence or absence.
God works, even in the hearts of those who don't know Him.
We know this because Scripture reveals it to us:
“He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.” - Daniel 2:21
Regardless of whether or not we’ve placed our hope and trust in Him as our Lord and Savior, we were all created by Him (Colossians 1:16); and God does as He pleases:
“Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.” - Romans 9:18

“Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.” - Psalm 115:3
“All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: ‘What have you done?’” - Daniel 4:35
It’s also important to note that God created “authenticity” as well.
“Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.” - John 1:3
As it says in James 1:17:
“Every good and perfect gift [i.e. authenticity and our ability to be that] is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
Genuine care, empathy, and the ability to truly connect with others are gifts that flow from a heart transformed by God.
But even in those who have not yet experienced that full transformation, God is still at work. He influences and moves in people’s lives, drawing them toward His goodness and instilling glimpses of true, heartfelt connection.
It’s where our natural understanding of right and wrong comes from, that nobody had to teach us—it was pre-installed.
So, when, by His grace, we align our actions and intentions with His work in us, authenticity isn’t something we have to manufacture—it’s something that naturally shines through because of who God is and what He does for His creation, made in His image.
He can positively influence us because He made us.
And by the way, He wants that with each and every one of us.
He created us and gave us free will to choose or not choose Him.
Just because we don’t give God the credit for any and all good that springs forth from us doesn’t mean it didn’t come from Him—it did.
God created us and wants recognition for the good that happens. He's jealous for His glory, and our ultimate purpose as humans is to give Him that glory through everything we say and do, rather than taking the credit for ourselves as though we're somehow "powerful" enough in our own right to do anything worthy of being called "good."
As Scripture says, we are but dust, and God gives us even the very next breath you take as you read these words.
In Conclusion
Yes, this post is also a call-to-action to repent from the sin of doing things our own way, to submit our lives to God, and do things His way. Everything else will flow into place if God takes center stage in our hearts.
No need to try and "be a good person," which is impossible anyway.
We can rest in His goodness and power, which is at work in all of His creation, and recognize that He desires that we choose to serve and worship Him because it is through that relationship that we find true fulfillment and purpose.
By surrendering our own ways and seeking Him, we allow His transformative work to shape our hearts and actions, leading to genuine authenticity that truly resonates with others and glorifies God in the process.
Amidst even life's most tumultuous trials, life is so much better with Christ at the center of it.
There is a peace over one's life that can't be "found from within" or from "deep work" because true authentic peace doesn’t come from us.
It comes from a God who loves those He made in His image and who sent His only Son to die on the cross for the sins that we've committed against a holy and righteous, all-powerful, and kind Father who seeks to redeem and restore His creation.
He seeks a relationship with us—not out of obligation but out of His boundless love and desire for us to experience the fullness of life in Him. This is why we have free will. It's not much of a relationship if we can't choose it.
Through Christ’s sacrifice, we are offered forgiveness and the opportunity to live transformed lives, no longer bound by our own efforts but empowered by His grace and truth.
This is the foundation for true peace and authenticity. When we surrender to Him and place Christ at the center, we experience a depth of joy and purpose that no self-driven pursuit can achieve.
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” - Matthew 6:33
"All things" includes true resonance with those you serve and interact with as well.
