If you are someone who wants to feel strong, toned and future-proof your health for 10/20/30 years down the line - resistance training could be one of the best things to implement!
Resistance training, also known as strength training, is an essential component of any fitness regimen, particularly for women. I find there's often a very big misconception that strength training for women will make you feel "bulky" - this is simply not true!! I urge all women to undertake some sort of resistance training.
It helps to build and maintain lean muscle mass, which helps to increase metabolism and burn more calories. By building lean muscle, you can increase metabolism and burn more calories throughout the day, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight. Having more muscle is also very beneficial for your physique, I can't count how many times I've heard "I just want to tone up" - having more muscle will help you to feel and look more "toned".
It can also improve bone density, reduce the risk of injury, and enhance overall physical performance. As well as this, it has been shown to have many positive effects on mental health, including reducing anxiety and depression.

For women, in particular, resistance training can help to combat the effects of ageing, one example would be loss of muscle mass - which is a natural occurrence around menopause due to the change in hormones! Also, as women age, they are at an increased risk for osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle. Resistance training has been shown to increase bone density, which can help prevent the onset of osteoporosis and reduce the risk of fractures.
So, how do you implement this? By no means am I recommending you have to train every single day and start powerlifting. Implementing 2-3 full body workouts per week, 30-60mins each, would be a great place to start. Getting a tailored and manageable program from a professional would be the best option, to ensure your program accommodates your fitness levels and also takes into consideration any injuries or niggles you may have!
In short, resistance training is one of the most beneficial things you can do as a woman, of all ages and fitness levels. By incorporating this type of exercise into a regular workout routine, you can reap the numerous physical and mental health benefits that come with building and maintaining a strong, healthy body.
