The Power of Recognizing and Nurturing Students' Natural Talents in Future Ready Schools

Today I worked with an 8th grade class helping them identify their natural ways of thinking, feeling and behaving and the value this brings to the world!

Why? In Future Ready schools, a significant shift is taking place—one that recognizes the crucial role of students understanding and embracing their natural talents. Future Ready schools share a common belief: education should be about more than just "learning." It should be a journey that empowers students to discover who they are, what they can create, and how they can make a positive impact on the world while they are at school.

Narrow view of intelligence

?Sir Ken Robinson highlighted the pitfalls of an education system overly focused on standardized testing and a narrow view of intelligence. He emphasized the uniqueness of each child, advocating for an educational approach that fosters creativity and individuality by helping students identify and develop their natural talents. This is not a 'fairy floss' approach to education. This is about nurturing the natural gifts of students so that they can confidently bring their unique strengths to solve problems, collaborate and innovate. Surely we need schools who encourage this type of approach?

The traditional approach often centers on addressing weaknesses rather than nurturing strengths. Imagine a paradigm shift where the emphasis is placed on strengths. Dr. Don Clifton, the founder of CliftonStrengths, posed a thought-provoking question:

"What would happen if we studied what is right with people instead of focusing on what is wrong with them?"

Focus on strengths while managing weaknesses.

?I spent countless hours and my parents’ money in addressing my many math and science weaknesses. These investments yielded minimal returns. (A nice way of saying my grades remained very low, and not through lack of effort).

?What if more attention were devoted to nurturing say my love for reading, poetry, or history? Embracing one’s strengths is transformative. It steers individuals towards a path of self-discovery, confidence, and engagement. Isn’t this what we want to see in every student?

Unleash strengths

Future ready schools deliberately shine a spotlight on the natural gifts of students. By helping students recognize and understand their potential, educators empower them to leverage their talents for personal and collective growth.

The introduction of tools like StrengthsExplorer provides students with valuable insights into their top three talents, offering a roadmap for highlighting their strengths and taking meaningful steps towards a better future.

It's time to shift the focus to what's right with our students!

Initiating assessments like StrengthsExplorer equips them with the language to articulate their thoughts, actions, and feelings when they are at their best. The goal is to cultivate a generation of students who not only know their strengths but also know how to collaboratively apply them to solve problems and build a brighter future during their school years and beyond.

?? If you're passionate about shaping the future of education, this is an important tool to unleash the brilliance of the students!

So valuable, Peter! We work all the time in supporting leaders to become future-fit, and it's exciting for me to read how schools are becoming so future-ready focused too!

I will never cease to be amazed by an education system that continues to focus on student’s deficits rather than focusing on their gifts and talents. It’s baffling and it defies science.
