There are some people who despise book knowledge. They use derogatory terms such as "being bookish: and actually believe that by saying so they are being smart. Most of these same people have educational qualifications they are so proud of but which are largely based on the book knowledge that they acquired when they doing their education.
People who write books are not fools. They are intelligent people whose extra gift is willingness to share their knowledge and ideas and information. Books are a medium for recording, storing and sharing knowledge and information and ideas. And knowledge, ideas and information are critical for "success" and even for survival.
There are people who are not gifted in reading and learning. They only do so when they have no other option. These are the people who, soon after getting their academic qualifications throw books away and completely stop any further learning. These people cannot read or learn anything unless they are promised a certificate or they are threatened with job dismissal or demotion if they do not show improvement in knowledge. Reading for the sake of reading and learning is not part of them.
Yet, professionally and careerwise, the more you learn and read the better for you. In general, your chances of success, or making progress, are higher when you have a habit of reading and learning than when you do not. The more variety of subjects that you learn the better. Do not listen to those who say reading widely is a lack of focus! They do not know what they are talking about.
Leaders such as CEOs, Board Chairperson's Board Members and Top Executives who have a reading and learning culture outperform those who don't. Business and companies that have many people with a culture of reading and learning outperforms those who lack the culture. This is expected especially for leaders of business organisations.
Here are some great books for everyone to read for a start;

If you have no interest in reading yourself, then you can find one or two avid readers to associate with. You can also get a knowledge coach to share with you what the coach learns and knows.

1 年Powerful article Engineer. I totally agree with you and can also add that reading widely surely increases your critical thinking ability and makes you sound smarter in meetings. To grow as a leader, I suggest one to become an ardent reader.
