The Power and Purpose of Storytelling

The pillowy pancakes with crispy edges at Bernard's for breakfast...
The chauffeured drive down Michigan Avenue – and the mid-March air that was almost as crisp as the pancakes...
The pure joy of my wife's smile as we fulfilled a long-awaited dream in celebration of her birthday: reservations at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
It was everything she'd imagined it would be, except for one thing.
The famous NYC location was closed for renovations, so we were in Chicago.
As you might imagine, this weekend overflowed with unforgettable stories. I just gave you a few bullet points.
Your Stories Are Some Your Greatest Tools
Experts often instruct us to tell more stories when teaching, selling, marketing.
And you've probably noticed that they almost always repeat the "statistic" that stories are more memorable than facts. As much as 22 times more memorable.
But here's the thing...
Does your sales pitch really need to be memorable? Probably not. It needs to impact your potential buyer emotionally.
Does your marketing need to be memorable? Meh.
It needs to help your audience draw the conclusion that you understand them and that you are the best option to get them to their desired outcome.
That doesn't mean you don't need to tell stories. You absolutely should.
It means you should tell the right stories for the right reason.
Think about it. You may remember that I took my wife to the Waldorf. You may remember it was her birthday.
Those details aren't going to be very effective to making you want to hire me to train your marketing team. It's not the right story for that.
(It is a decent story to illustrate that memorability isn't the main reason to tell stories in sales and marketing.)
